A huge sinkhole has swallowed 25 students dancing on a concrete floor at a graduation party in Lima, Peru.

Daily Mail reported that the sinkhole appeared after the concrete dance floor collapsed.

The students, celebrating their high school graduation in San Martin, were reportedly jumping and dancing together to music when the ground opened up.

Peru Sinkhole Turns Party into Tragedy

In a TikTok video of the disaster uploaded on December 17 with a caption written in Spanish: "Prom night turns to tragedy," the sharply dressed students in Peru can be seen falling at the bottom of the crater or sinkhole, which has the size of multiple cars, as a cloud of dust fills the air.

The students reportedly fell to a depth of between six and seven feet deep. According to the New York Post, the DJ stopped the music as people near the sinkhole rushed to help the students.

Someone then placed a ladder into the huge hole while a man acted as a guide and offered an arm to help the students get out of the crater.

The young men also politely let their long-dressed female dance partners leave the sinkhole first. Peruvian publication El Popular reported that there were no fatalities.

However, the 25 teens involved were still rushed to a nearby health center as they possibly suffered injuries and bruises on different parts of their bodies.

Local media site Trome reported that the cause of the collapse was still unclear. However, the floor was reportedly made of "wood," and it could not support the weight of the students.

According to New York Post, a TikToker quipped, "When they said... we're gonna dance till the floor breaks," while another joked: "The real one tore up the dance floor."

Footage of the fiasco in Peru has already garnered more than 4.2 million views on TikTok.

What Causes Sinkholes?

Many things can cause a sinkhole to appear, such as a sudden drop in water levels through droughts or groundwater pumping from wells, mines, and quarries.

It could also be triggered by intense rainstorms or floods or long-term leakage from sewer or storm-water pipes.

Sinkholes usually occur when the rock under the surface does not dissolve in water. However, it is made of grains that are small enough to be carried away by underground water currents.

Sinkholes usually form mainly in limestone. According to AS, a sinkhole left open to take more water may continue to grow and can contribute to the appearance of more sinkholes nearby.

Blasters like dynamite can also result in the appearance of a sinkhole. A person can be harmed or even killed when stepping into a sinkhole.

Individuals could be flooded to death if they do not make it out of the hole in time. Similar to the force of a car crash, a fall into a sinkhole can also cause serious injuries, including whiplash, fractured bones, concussions, and sprains.
