Former NFL running back Ronnie Hillman, who won a Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos, has now passed away. His family posted on his Instagram page and revealed the late football star's cause of death.

Ronnie Hillman Cause of Death

According to CNN, he passed away due to a rare form of cancer called renal medullary carcinoma. The post from his family reads, "It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother & father, Ronnie K Hillman Jr."

His family also stated that he passed away quietly and peacefully with his family and friends by his side. He was diagnosed with the disease back in August.

Renal medullary carcinoma is a form of highly aggressive cancer. While rare, it affects people with sickle cell trait (SCT) primarily, though it is noted if the Super Bowl winner had SCT himself.

Denver Broncos, San Diego State University Pay Tribute to Fallen NFL Champion Ronnie Hillman

Hillman was the winning running back for the Denver Broncos during Super Bowl 50. The team took to Twitter to express their condolences on Thursday morning:

San Diego State University, which was Hillman's alma mater, also posted a tribute to the late star. They said that he was "Gone way too soon," and added, "We'll miss you, Ronnie."

The school's official website also released a statement regarding their former player/student. It was written by the school's athletics director, John David Wicker.

"We are saddened to hear about the passing of Ronnie Hillman. Ronnie helped resurrect San Diego State football in his two seasons in 2010 and 2011 and has recently been around the program offering wisdom and insight," Wicker wrote.

According to The Guardian, San Diego State coach Brady Hoke, who had coached Hillman in his college days, stated that he will remember Hillman "as a great teammate and hard worker." He added that the late running back's passion for the game was contagious and that Hillman will always be an "Aztec for Life."

Ronnie Hillman's Short but Remarkable Football Career

Hillman was drafted in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He went on to play 48 games alongside Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, winning Super Bowl 50 in 2016. According to Hollywood Life, this was the defining moment of his career.

However, that same year, Hillman left the Broncos and played for the Dallas Cowboys and the Minnesota Vikings. He was beloved by his teammates, with former Broncos teammate Orlando Franklin asking fans to pray for Hillman while he was still in hospice care, battling his rare form of cancer.

With the San Diego State Aztecs, he rushed for a total of 3,243 yards and had 36 touch downs in his two seasons with the team. He was also a high school athletic star for La Habra High School, playing track, football, and basketball.
