Michelle Obama Gets Brutally Honest About Marriage Struggles, Says She 'Couldn’t Stand' Barack Obama for 10 Years
Former first lady Michelle Obama has admitted that she "couldn't stand" her husband, former President Barack Obama, for a decade of their 30-year marriage.
In a Revolt TV roundtable conversation earlier this month, Michelle, 58, revealed that raising children and her husband's political career had put strains on her marriage to Barack.
"People think I'm being catty saying this - it's like, there were 10 years where I couldn't stand my husband. And guess when it happened? When those kids were little," the former first lady noted.
Michelle said the imbalance in their marriage came when Barack's political career was on the rise. She noted that she was primarily responsible for taking care of their two daughters, Sasha and Malia, at that time, PEOPLE reported.
"And for 10 years while we're trying to build our careers and, you know, worrying about school and who's doing what and what, I was like, 'Ugh, this isn't even.' And guess what? Marriage isn't 50/50 - ever, ever," the former first lady said.
She added: "There are times I'm 70, he's 30. There are times he's 60, 40, but guess what? Ten years - we've been married 30. I would take 10 bad years over 30 - it's just how you look at it. And people give up... 'Five years - I can't take it.'"
Michelle Obama noted that for a marriage to work, you've "got to know" your partner and "like" who they are. She added that feelings change over time, and when that happens, couples need to put work into their relationships.
