Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger said he is afraid for the "future of this country" if former President Donald Trump is not criminally charged for his alleged role in the January 6 insurrection.

In an interview on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday, Kinzinger noted that "if this is not a crime, I don't know what is." Kinzinger was one of two Republican members of the House January 6 committee to probe the Capitol riot.

The Republican lawmaker added that if a president "can incite an insurrection and not be held accountable," there is no limit to what a president "can do or can't do."

The January 6 panel referred four criminal charges against Trump to the Justice Department.

The committee recommended that prosecutors pursue charges of obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to make a false statement, and "incite," "assist," or "aid or comfort" an insurrection.

The criminal referrals do not obligate the Justice Department to push for any charges. However, it could aid the agency in conducting its own probe.

Adam Kinzinger in January 6 Panel Probe

The Republican lawmaker also criticized his fellow Republicans for allowing Trump to still influence the U.S. political landscape by downplaying Donald Trump's alleged incitement of the riot.

Adam Kinzinger also blamed House minority leader Kevin McCarthy, who is currently aiming for the House speakership.

Kinzinger noted that McCarthy is "the reason Donald Trump is still a factor," adding that McCarthy also contributes to "some of the crazy elements of the House."

The outgoing Republican representative noted that Trump should consider McCarthy "his best friend" as the former president is still politically alive due to the Republican leader.

Kinzinger added that the Republican party is "not the future" of the United States "unless it corrects."

He noted that if people are eyeing a "successful America in 20 years," it will not happen based on what "Marjorie Taylor Greene wants."

Kinzinger also took a jab against former Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell and other Senate Republicans for failing to convict Trump during his impeachment hearing.

Other Republicans on Donald Trump

Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas also shared his opinion on Donald Trump's January 6 insurrection probe.

Hutchinson noted that the January 6 Capitol riot "disqualifies" Trump from winning the 2024 GOP nomination.

The Arkansas governor said he does not believe that Trump should be the next president, adding that the January 6 incident "really disqualifies him for the future."

The Republican governor noted that he wants to see the alternatives for the position, adding that he wants to see everything he can do to ensure that there will be "the alternative and that Donald Trump is not the nominee of the party."

Meanwhile, the former president has repeatedly denied the allegations against him regarding the insurrection that happened on Capitol Hill. Donald Trump even accused the January 6 panel of politically persecuting him.
