Buffalo Bills’ Safety Damar Hamlin Shows Improvement in Condition; Joe Biden Spoke With Hamlin’s Parents
Buffalo Bills' safety Damar Hamlin is showing "signs of improvement" after he collapsed on the field during a Bills-Bengals game. Hamlin's team made the update.
However, the Bills' safety is still in critical condition two days after being in cardiac arrest.
The team took to their Twitter account to update followers about Hamlin's condition. The Buffalo Bills added that their safety player is expected to stay in the intensive care unit as his healthcare team continues to observe and treat him.
Dorian Glenn, Hamlin's uncle, noted that his nephew has suffered lung damage and cannot breathe on his own after he collapsed on the field. Glenn added that Hamlin had been receiving 100% oxygen from a ventilator, but it has not been reduced to 50%.
A CBS News medical contributor, Dr. David Agus, said Hamlin may have suffered from what is known as commotio cordis. It is a heart arrhythmia that happens when someone takes a direct hit to the chest.
The condition is described as "a confusion of the heart." Agus said that the heart needs to be shocked back into a regular rhythm.

U.S. President Joe Biden Spoke to Damar Hamlin's Parents
U.S. President Joe Biden told reporters that he spoke with Hamlin's parents "at length" after the Bills' safety suffered cardiac arrest.
The president noted on Wednesday that football is "dangerous" with people working on helmets and concussion protocols, which makes "a lot of sense."
Meanwhile, the White House earlier said that the president was aware of what occurred in the Bills-Bengals game, hoping Hamlin's condition improves.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Tuesday that the White House hopes Hamlin's condition and health improve quickly.
Jean-Pierre also described Hamlin's cardiac arrest as "horrific news."
Bills' Safety Damar Hamlin's Condition
Indianapolis Colts' Rodney Thomas II visited Hamlin in the hospital. They were childhood friends and high school teammates.
Thomas noted that he and Hamlin talked every day and that he even spoke to him before Monday's game.
Thomas will be playing with the Colts against the Houston Texans on Sunday. He noted that he will have Hamlin on his mind during the game.
He added that he has no doubt that Hamlin will walk out of the hospital on his own, describing the Bills' safety as a "fighter."
Meanwhile, NFL Chief Medical Officer Dr. Allan Sills said that the 60-minute meeting between medical teams and NFL officials is the most important thing they do in games.
He noted that the main aim as of the moment is treating Hamlin, while the medical team will continue to look for answers, such as possible causes of Hamlin's condition.
Sills said that there is a lot of theories and discussion on the Bills' safety condition, such as commotio cordis. The NFL medical officer said that it "certainly is possible."
