'Family Guy' Creator Seth MacFarlane Pledges Up to $1M to 'Reading Rainbow' Kickstarter Campaign
Seth MacFarlane is backing LeVar Burton's "Reading Rainbow" campaign with a pledge of up to $1 million.
The "Family Guy" creator will match every donation made in the next five days dollar for dollar, up to $1 million. Burton's Kickstarter campaign reached its original goal very quickly, so he decided to amend the goal to $5 million, the Chicago Tribune noted.
The new endpoint gives more schools in the need the opportunity to get the "Reading Rainbow" program for free.
Burton, who shared a video of how touched he was when he reached the original goal, also sent a video to MacFarlane.
"Seth, this donation is going to help us ensure that this next generation is indeed a generation that loves to read. And that's no small thing," he said. "You've got deep pockets, baby. But you've got an even bigger heart."
The Kickstarter campaign ends July 2, so Burton has been urging supporters for help.
"But before you start calling your friends and spreading the word, please help me thank my friend, Seth, for his amazing generosity," Burton wrote on the Kickstarter page. "With his help, we can make an even bigger difference for an entire generation of kids. That's just huge."
As of Friday afternoon, the campaign had raised $4.1 million, with more than 87,000 people contributing.
The initial $1 million was to help get the program into 1,500 classrooms, so after raising $2.5 million in 48 hours, Burton and his team knew they could push it further.
"And with one-in-four children growing up illiterate, there's so much more that we can do," the Kickstarter says. "We believe that it's essential to raise a new generation of children who love reading, and so do you."
