The daughter of one of the highest-ranking House Democrats was arrested on Saturday for allegedly spray-painting a monument and assaulting a police officer during a protest in Boston.

Riley Dowell, who is the daughter of House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, was reportedly born male and transitioned to female. Dowell was one of the 20 people protesting police brutality in what some call an Antifa rally on Saturday night.

When the police arrived, they reportedly saw Dowell spray-painting anti-police slogans "ACAB" that stands for "All Cops Are Bastards" and "NO COP CITY, which Antifa demonstrators recently used in Atlanta.

Dowell made her first court appearance on Monday and was accompanied by her father, Rodney S. Dowell, one of Boston's most well-known attorneys.

She pleaded not guilty to her charges which include vandalizing a historic marker or monument and assault and battery of a police officer, according to the Daily Mail. Dowell was reportedly arraigned under her birth name, Jared.

Timeline of the Boston Protests That Led to the Arrest of Top House Democrat's Daughter

The Boston Police Department referred to Katherine Clark's daughter as "Jared Dowell." Riley Dowell was born under that name but has since transitioned to becoming female, changing her name to Riley Dowell.

A protest occurred at the Parkman Bandstand Monument in the Boston Common at around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. Cops who arrived at the scene reportedly saw Dowell vandalizing the monument.

But when police were about to arrest Dowell, Fox News reported that around 20 protesters surrounded them and yelled profanities through megaphones that also caused traffic to come to a standstill.

While the demonstrators were "interfering with the arrest, a police officer was reportedly hit in the face, causing bleeding to the nose and mouth.

Police said Dowell attempted to flee by flailing her arms, striking an officer who approached her. The cop was reportedly taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Another protester, 27-year-old Andrea Colletti, was also arrested about an hour later. Like Dowell, she has also been accused of spray painting the monument. Dowell has been released after paying a bail worth $500,

Police officers in Boston were reportedly on "high alert" on Saturday as they expected an anti-law-enforcement demonstration in solidarity with "Atlanta Forest Defenders," Fox News reported.

Protests in Atlanta started after police officers shot and killed a demonstrator who allegedly opened fire on them, injuring one, earlier this week.

Top House Democrat Issues Statement on Daughter's Arrest

Following her daughter's arrest, top House Democrat Katherine Clark released a statement on social media. According to Politico, she acknowledged the incident, saying that it was a difficult time for her as a parent.

She added that her daughter will be "evaluated by the legal system, and I am confident in that process."

Clark is currently the second-highest-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives after Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. She was elected whip last month.

When asked by reporters how she felt about her daughter getting arrested during a protest against police, she told them to refer to the statement she released on social media.
