Florida: Mass Shooting Suspect Killed by Police After He Stole a Woman's Car
A Florida man suspected of being the perpetrator of the Lakeland Mass Shooting in Central Florida last January 30 has been killed following a long chase that involved the suspect stealing a woman's car. The suspected Lakeland Mass Shooter has been identified as Alex Greene, 21.
Greene reportedly stole a car while being chased by police. He eventually crashed into a building in Winter Haven, which Lakeland Police Chief Sammy Taylor noted was just a short distance from where he shot and injured 11 people during his mass shooting attack.
Police are confident that it was Greene who was involved in the January 30 mass shooting incident, though Chief Taylor admitted that they still do not know to what extent his involvement was.
Greene has had an outstanding burglary warrant on him, according to CBS News, and detectives were hoping to question him about the mass shooting incident by using that warrant to take him in.
Car Chase Led to Suspected Lakeland Mass Shooter's Death
The long chase happened on Monday when deputies from the Polk County Sheriff's Office tried serving Greene the arrest warrant. However, the 21-year-old suspect immediately fled, and officers from the FDLE, ATF, and Lakeland Police all engaged in a car chase.
After approximately 15 minutes, Greene tried to escape by foot and into heavy traffic. According to WESH-2, he carjacked a vehicle belonging to an elderly woman. This would soon spell his demise.

When he realized that he could not get away, Greene reportedly saw the occupied vehicle, forced its driver out, and tried to get away from the scene and into a heavily-trafficked road,
Shortly after jacking the car, Greene attempted to ram Lakeland Police Captain Eric Harper with it. However, the police captain managed to fire the vehicle six times and managed to hit Greene.
The stolen vehicle then smashed into a local shop, though the wounded Greene continued driving for a short distance. He was eventually arrested and taken to a hospital to treat his injuries. He would die shortly after.
Lakeland Mass Shooter Had a History of Crime
Aside from the outstanding warrant for burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary that deputies tried to use to arrest him, Greene also had a slew of cases against him. According to the Associated Press, these include ten previous felony charges back in 2013, including fleeing to elude law enforcement, battery on a law enforcement officer, possession of weapons, and resisting arrest.
When police inspected the vehicle, he initially used to try and get away from them. They found 28 grams (1 ounce) of cocaine, marijuana, a Glock .357 handgun, and $2,813 in cash. Greene was also found to be carrying $5,833 in cash.
As for his mass shooting attack, Greene injured ten people, two of whom were critically injured. The eight others had suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
According to reports, a vehicle drove through a neighborhood on the afternoon of January 30 and opened fire from within the car. All the people hit were men ages 20 to 35, and officials believe this was a targeted attack.
