Three police officers were injured in a shooting at the Lincoln Heights neighborhood in Los Angeles, California, on Wednesday night, police said.

According to Fox News, a shootout started when a narcotics team arrived at the 3800 block of Broadway around 4:30 p.m. to serve an arrest warrant. Police said the suspect was not compliant, so officers used tear gas after two hours later.

The suspect shot at officers, hitting three of them. In a press conference on Wednesday night, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Michel Moore said one of the officers was shot in the stomach, one in the arm, and the other in the leg.

The officers were reportedly senior officers in the Metropolitan division, and each of them was a member of a K-9 unit.

Moore said they were rushed to a local hospital and were all in stable condition. He added that his team avoided a "potentially deadly situation," and he was "grateful the officers" were okay.

Los Angeles Shooting Suspect Died

Before the initial shooting, police said the man wanted for a felony ran down an alleyway and entered a residence, where he barricaded himself and remained inside for several hours.

Police then set up a perimeter, and a K-9 unit was dispatched to the scene. Authorities repeatedly called out to the suspect, but he refused to surrender.

A tear gas was then used to get him to come out peacefully, but the suspect instead opened fire on the officers, who fired back.

According to KTLA, the suspect returned inside the home, where he remained, as additional police, SWAT teams, and other emergency personnel arrived and surrounded the building.

SWAT personnel approached the residence at about 8:10 p.m., and an elderly man and a kid were removed from the house.

A robot from the LAPD was spotted in the alley behind the residence and eventually broke through the door. Another tear gas was allegedly used at around 8:45 p.m., and SWAT entered the house shortly after.

LAPD Commander Stacy Spell said as the SWAT personnel conducted "a search of that area, they located the suspect, who was at that time non-responsive."

The suspect has not been identified, but he was pronounced dead after being found unresponsive.

In the press conference, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said: "Every day, the men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department put themselves in harm's way; tonight is a reminder that the danger is very real." 

She noted that she was able to talk with two of the three heroic cops, and they all appeared to be in stable condition, CBS News reported.

"I deeply appreciate their service and let them know that their city stands with them, and I very much look forward to their recovery," the mayor added.

According to ABC News, gun control in California is among the strictest in the country, with numerous regulations being implemented in the wake of recent horrific shootings.

However, in the first few weeks of 2023, the state has already been hit by a spate of mass shootings.
