More than two weeks after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, three women traveling from Texas to sell clothes at a flea market in Mexico are still missing, according to authorities.

Texas police told CNN on Saturday that the three women, identified as Marina Perez Rios, 48; Martiza Trinidad Perez Rios, 47; and their friend Dora Alicia Cervantes Saenz, 53, have gone missing, and Mexican officials are investigating their disappearance.

The three women disappeared on February 24, a week before four Americans were kidnapped in Matamoros in Tamaulipas state, about 300 miles east of Montemorelos.

Roel Bermea, the Peñitas, Texas police chief, told CNN that the three women were heading to a flea market in the city of Montemorelos in Mexico's state of Nuevo Leon.

The flea market is approximately a three-hour drive south from the U.S.-Mexico border.

Authorities Are Investigating the Disappearance of 3 Women in Mexico

Following a call from the spouse of one of the missing ladies, Texas police began investigating their disappearance, according to Roel Bermea.

The chief added that the investigator contacted the FBI "to see what they could do" after several days of no communication.

Bermea noted that they notified the FBI about the three women missing in Mexico as there is not much they can do in an international missing people investigation.

According to ABC 6, the FBI is aware of the incident, but it could not provide any information at this time.

Since the missing women are not American citizens but Mexican nationals living in the U.S., the U.S. government has not gotten involved in the search, according to the Attorney General's Office of Nuevo Leon, which is leading the investigation.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Attorney General's Office of Nuevo Leon said authorities are using drones, all-terrain vehicles, and dogs in their search operations being carried out every day. 

The office noted that investigators were also coordinating with authorities in the neighboring Tamaulipas state to intensify the search there, as the women's families believe "that the event occurred there." 

Bermea said it is the first time they are looking into a disappearance in another country.

"We're just concerned," he told KRGV. "We really haven't had any other incidents that I can recall of something like this happening in another country."

The three missing women were reportedly driving a green mid-1990s Chevrolet Silverado.

Four Americans Were Also Kidnapped in Mexico Last Week

Four Americans were kidnapped last week on a road trip to Matamoros in Tamaulipas.

According to Mexican officials, two of the travelers were killed, while the other two are back in the U.S. A Mexican woman was also killed by a stray bullet.

NBC News reported that the Americans had come to Mexico so that one woman in the group could get a cosmetic treatment, but the cartel's gunmen mistakenly targeted them.

After the Gulf cartel apologized Thursday, five people were arrested the next day.

The government's response and search for the four Americans differ from the efforts to find the 112,000 missing Mexicans across the country, many of whom are being looked for only by their desperate families.
