When the pro-Trump mob chanted "Hang Mike Pence" during the January 6 Capitol insurrection, the former vice president knew his life was in danger. Mike Pence recently opened up and said that Donald Trump also placed his family in danger during that fateful day.

Pence was among the politicians who attended the annual white-tie Gridiron Dinner on Sunday in Washington, D.C. and said the former president was wrong.

"President Trump was wrong... I had no right to overturn the election. And his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day, and I know history will hold Donald Trump accountable," Pence said during his remarks at the event.

According to ABC News, this was the sharpest remark from the former vice president yet.

Pence acted as Trump's most loyal lieutenant during the previous administration. However, when Trump pressured his vice president to go against the constitution and overturn the elections, everything changed.

Pence refused and chose to go with his constitutionally-mandated duty as the vice president.

This angered Trump and allegedly incited the mob to disrupt Congress and storm the Capitol, where Pence presided over the ceremonial certification of the election results at that time.

Mike Pence Says What Happened on January 6 was a 'Disgrace'

Mike Pence reportedly often shied away from confronting his former boss. But with Pence being a prospective Republican candidate and the 2024 presidential elections looming, he might soon loosen a few more barbs.

According to The Guardian, Pence let loose even more blistering remarks that night, calling what happened on January 6 a "disgrace." 

"And it mocks decency to portray it any other way. For as long as I live, I will never, ever diminish the injuries sustained, the lives lost, or the heroism of law enforcement on that tragic day," he added.

Pence said he is currently exploring his options and may announce his candidacy soon. However, Donald Trump remains the current frontrunner for the Republican nomination, followed closely by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Mike Pence Slams Tucker Carlson for Downplaying January 6 Capitol Insurrection

The former vice president and Indiana governor also went after pro-Trump rightwing media and commentators who downplayed the events of January 6.

"Tourists don't injure 140 police officers by sightseeing," Mike Pence said. "Tourists don't break down doors to get to the Speaker of the House or voice threats against public officials."

These remarks came after Fox News host Tucker Carlson falsely portrayed the January 6 attack on the Capitol as a "peaceful chaos."

Carlson received much condemnation from both Democrats and Republicans, as well as Capitol Police, for his portrayal of the events. The former vice president added that people "have a right to know what took place" during that fateful day.

However, CNN reported that these remarks came a few days after he asked a judge to block a subpoena for his testimony to the special counsel investigating the insurrection.
