Lori Vallow Daybell: Infamous Idaho 'Cult Mom' Not Getting Death Penalty Over Killing Own Children
Infamous child murderer Lori Vallow Daybell, also known as "Cult Mom," who killed her own children in Idaho, would not be facing the death penalty, according to 7th District Judge Steven Boyce.
"Cult Mom" allegedly plotted with her husband, Chad Daybell, to kill their two children, 7-year-old JJ Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan, as well as Chad Daybell's late wife, Tammy Daybell. They succeeded, and the prosecution was seeking the death penalty for them prior to the judge's ruling.
Judge Boyce noted that Vallow Daybell has not waived her right to a speedy trial. This means the proceeding could not be rescheduled to give her defense team ample time to review the evidence.
However, the Associated Press noted that while "Cult Mom" will not be facing the death penalty, it is still on the table for her husband, Chad Daybell.
Prosecutors Made Mistakes During Discovery in the Lori Vallow Daybell Case
ABC-4 Daily News revealed that prosecutors for the government allegedly made multiple discovery violations as it looked into the case of "Cult Mom." When Lori Vallow Daybell's lawyers filed the motion to dismiss the death penalty for their client, it claimed that discoveries were not supplied to the defense counsel, including statements by her co-defendant. The defense argued that this would be favorable to them as a death sentence could be overturned because of this.
"The government has bates stamped over 80,000 documents in this case, yet has admitted that it's just the bulk of it, not all of it," the motion states.

As for her defense, "Cult Mom" and her lawyers argued that the death penalty should be dismissed as their client has mental health issues, per KTBV-7. Given the high-profile nature of this case and the issue of her mental health, the defense argued that the court should sanction the state by ruling against the death penalty.
'Cult Mom' and Husband Used Doomsday Cult Beliefs to Kill Children and Get Social Security Funds
According to prosecutors, both Lori and Chad had doomsday-focused religious beliefs and used them as part of their plot to kill their kids as well as Chad Daybell's ex-wife. This was all part of their plan to steal social security funds and insurance money from their victims.
Tylee Ryan, who Lori had with a now-deceased former husband, had been getting social security benefits after he died. The same goes for her younger brother, JJ. The couple plotted to kill her to get these benefits.
The couple's extended family reported that the children went missing, so an investigation was launched in November 2019. The police soon found that the couple lied about their children's whereabouts, leading them to conduct a search on Chad Daybell's property in rural Idaho. This was where they found the bodies of Tylee and JJ.
