A Colorado dentist is facing a murder charge after he allegedly killed his wife and the mom of his six children by lacing her protein shakes with toxic arsenic and cyanide so he could start a new life with his mistress, according to court documents.

Fox News reported that James Toliver Craig, 45, was arrested Sunday in Aurora on charges of one count of first-degree murder. He allegedly poisoned his 43-year-old wife, Angela Craig, who was declared brain dead on March 18 and had her life support eventually removed.

An arrest warrant affidavit noted that Craig reportedly flew his orthodontist lover from Texas to Denver while his wife was dying in the hospital. The two had allegedly exchanged "sexually explicit emails" before the orthodontist arrived in Denver.

Their rocky marriage, money problems, and Craig's alleged plan to kill her were all detailed in the affidavit.

Colorado Dentist Searched and Purchased Poison Online

The investigation revealed that James Toliver Craig had gone to great lengths in trying to kill his wife, Aurora police detective Bobbi Olson said in the affidavit.

Investigators noted that on February 27, the Colorado dentist created a secret email account, jimandwaffles.com, which he only used on a computer in his now-closed Summerbrook Dental Group.

According to CNN, Craig researched multiple "undetectable poisons" on the computer. He also did searches like "how many grams of pure arsenic will kill a human" and watched YouTube videos for "how to make poison" and "Top 5 Undetectable Poisons That Show No Signs of Foul Play" in the weeks before his wife's death.

He also used his new email account to order arsenic online that was delivered to their home. The affidavit noted that Angela Craig went to a hospital on March 6, or two days after the package of arsenic arrived.

There, she reported that she was dizzy, felt her body was responding slowly, and could not focus her eyes, all consistent with several symptoms of arsenic poisoning.

Angela even texted James, "I feel drugged," as shown in the screenshots of the text messages between the couple.

"Given our history, I know that must be triggering. Just for the record, I didn't drug you. I am super worried, though. You looked pale before I left. Like in your lips even," James replied.

Angela's sister told police that her sister said her husband had already drugged her before when the Colorado dentist attempted suicide and did not want his wife to stop him, according to the affidavit.

Craig also ordered oleandrin, a hazardous plant extract, on March 6. However, the affidavit said it was "intercepted by FedEx" at the request of investigators and was never delivered.

Collogues Become Suspicious of the Colorado Dentist

James Toliver Craig allegedly took his wife to the emergency room on Wednesday night after she complained of a terrible headache and dizziness, The Insider reported.

Police said she had a seizure shortly after she arrived at the hospital, and her condition deteriorated rapidly, so much so that she had to be put on life support. She was eventually declared brain dead and was taken off life support on Sunday.

After Craig's business partner expressed fear to a nurse that Angela Craig had been poisoned, the Aurora Police Department's Major Crimes Homicide Unit began looking into the matter.

The Colorado dentist's business partner also said he became suspicious after learning from an office manager who had opened a package for Craig and found a container inside with a biohazard label, saying it contained potassium cyanide.

The affidavit said there was no need to have this chemical in the office. 

"James was known to make Angela protein shakes regularly," the affidavit said, adding that it is believed that the Colorado dentist provided his wife with the poison through these shakes.

Citing several emails, investigators noted that Craig made travel arrangements for his mistress to visit him, which almost coincided with Angela's hospitalizations.

The Daily Beast reported that Angela had been hospitalized twice before Wednesday. Craig made his initial court appearance on Monday, and formal charges are reportedly scheduled to be filed on Thursday.

He remains in custody without bond and is not permitted to contact any of his six children.
