Former President Donald Trump was found liable by a federal jury in New York for sexual assault and battery in the E. Jean Carroll rape case. However, the ex-POTUS is appealing the verdict even after he attacked his accuser during the CNN Town Hall, as well as accusing the judge of being biased on social media.

While the jurors did not find Trump liable for rape, they did find him to be guilty of battery and defamation, awarding former Elle magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll a reward of $5 million in damages,

However, in his appeal, the former president insisted that he does not know Carroll and even doubled down on this during the CNN Town Hall event. "I swear on my children, which I never do. I have no idea who this woman is. This is a fake story," he stated.

According to the BBC, this means that the case will now move to the Second Circuit of the US Court of Appeals. Trump's attorney, Joe Tacopina, argued that his client could not get a fair trial in New York, which is the ex-POTUS's hometown, as he is very unpopular in the state.

Roberta Kaplan, who represents E. Jean Carroll, stated that she is very confident of winning the case again as Trump has "no legitimate arguments for appeal," adding, "I've rarely felt more confident about an appeal than I do about this one."

After Trump attacked her during the CNN Town Hall, Carroll stated through Kaplan that she is giving "serious consideration" about filing another defamation lawsuit against the former president.

Donald Trump Accuses Judge of Being Biased Against Him

Even though he is appealing the verdict, Donald Trump accused Judge Lewis Kaplan, who has no relation to Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan, of being a biased judge.

Following the verdict, Trump lashed out at the verdict, calling it "a continuation of the greatest witch hunt of all time" and a "disgrace." He then called Judge Kaplan a "biased" and "anti-Trump" judge.

The ex-POTUS reportedly stated that Judge Kaplan made sure "the result was as negative as it could possibly be, speaking to, and in control of a jury from an anti-Trump area..."

Donald Trump was invited by the judge many times to testify in court and defend himself from the allegations. However, despite vowing to confront Carroll, he did not show up in court throughout the case.

CNN Town Hall Criticized Over Giving Donald Trump a Platform to Spread More Lies

The CNN Town Hall, where Trump doubled down on his election lies as well as continued his attacks on E. Jean Carroll and political opponents, received much criticism.

Fact-checkers from various news organizations have pointed out many of the falsehoods uttered by Trump throughout the event, from his comments on immigration to the economy to his classified documents.

According to the New York Times, the ex-POTUS praised January 6 rioters. He even stated that Congress should allow the federal government to default on its debt, risking a global economic crisis. He also called Carroll a "whack job" and then called CNN moderator Kaitlan Collins "a nasty person."
