Much like what happened to Princess Diana, her son, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle almost met the same fate as they were chased by paparazzi, this time in New York.

It almost had a dangerous turn for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as the paparazzi relentlessly pursued the royal couple.

According to the BBC, the chase resulted in "multiple near collisions," though it ended with no arrests or injuries, says the New York Police Department. Details of the chase could not be verified yet at this time, though the NYPD did confirm that numerous photographers chased Harry and Meghan and "made their transport challenging."

Several reports claimed that half a dozen cars were involved in the chase, with reports of reckless driving and several cars running through red lights. There were also reports of cars driving on the pavement as well as cars carrying out blocking moves. There was even a car that reversed down a one-way street and a driver taking photographs of the couple while driving.

Harry and Meghan were reportedly at a friend's house and did not return directly so they would not compromise that friend's security. However, they were chased by paparazzi, with the couple and Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, being forced to take shelter at a Manhattan police station.

The three were forced to flag down a New York taxi soon after, with an NYPD officer accompanying them inside. However, the vehicle was soon spotted by the photographers again.

The cab driver who drove the royal couple, Sukhcharn Singh, spoke with the BBC and said, "A security guard hailed me, next thing you know Prince Harry and his wife were hopping into my cab."

He then recounted that a garbage truck blocked their path and then the paparazzi came. He said the reports of a "near catastrophic chase" were exaggerated and he did not think the paparazzi were being "aggressive."

Police Push Back on Harry and Meghan Markle's Account of the Car Chase

While the couple claimed it was a wild chase, two NYPD detectives are refuting these claims. These two detectives were the ones who accompanied Harry and Meghan's private vehicle.

They told ABC News that while the royal couple claimed that it was a caravan of vehicles that chased them, the officers stated that they only saw photographers on bicycles and that they are visible on security cameras.

The officers added that the interaction lasted no more than 20 minutes and not two hours as the couple claimed. This was the official NYPD statement on the matter:

"On Wednesday evening, May 16, the NYPD assisted the private security team protecting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. There were numerous photographers that made their transport challenging. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at their destination and there were no reported collisions, summonses, injuries, or arrests in regard."

Buckingham Palace Has No Comment on Harry and Meghan's New York Car Chase

PEOPLE magazine tried to reach out to Buckingham Palace for comment after Harry and Meghan were involved in a "near catastrophic car chase" in New York City. However, the palace had no comment on the incident.

King Charles and Queen Camilla were spotted in Covent Garden last Wednesday in central London. It was their first public appearance since the coronation.
