Billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban believes that Elon Musk may have had an ulterior motive when it comes to running Twitter.

According to Fortune, Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks and "Shark Tank" investor, took to Twitter to share his theory on what Musk's long-term plans are for Twitter.

Cuban speculated that Musk's plans for Twitter have little to do with protecting civil rights included in the US Constitution.

"He isn't pushing free speech. When Elon Musk goes out of his way to engage with and promote the accounts and tweets of people who disagree with him, then I'll believe he is about free speech," Cuban tweeted on Thursday.

The crypto investor also disagreed with Walter Isaacson, a biographer of Musk, who believes that the once-ousted PayPal CEO's big goal is disrupting the financial services industry. 

Drawing from Musk's highly publicized fallout with the creators of ChatGPT, OpenAI, in late 2015, Cuban speculates that the visionary entrepreneur has now shifted his focus to building his own version of ChatGPT.

"He gets to take the entire Twitter firehose to train or feed any open-source model and have a competitor to the Big 3," Cuban noted. In this context, the "Big 3" refers to Google, Meta (formerly Facebook), and OpenAI, including its partner Microsoft.

Elon Musk has previously claimed credit for recruiting key personnel from OpenAI, including chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, who notably succeeded in competition with Google's DeepMind.

Mark Cuban Is Cautious About AI

Like many accomplished technology entrepreneurs, Mark Cuban shared concerns about the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI), Insider reported. 

In a series of tweets, he expressed his apprehension, emphasizing that the technology can empower individuals with harmful intentions and warned of unintended consequences.

Despite being a co-founder of OpenAI and making initial investments in the company, Musk has recently publicly criticized the organization.

Musk also took action by revoking OpenAI's license to use Twitter data in the development of ChatGPT earlier this year.

Elon Musk Breaks Silence

According to The Street, Elon Musk finally addressed a discussion initiated by Mark Cuban concerning free speech.

Musk's reply came in a tweet in which he welcomed "suggestions for improvement." He directed this message to Cuban and T(w)itter Daily News, a Twitter news account dedicated to Twitter 2.0.

In reaction to Musk's response, Cuban outlined seven proposed changes that he believes would enhance the platform. The focal point of Cuban's suggestions revolved around the For You tab on Twitter.

He asserted that the algorithm for curating the content displayed in For You tweets exhibited bias against the most popular and influential users.

Cuban offered a potential solution, stating, "the easy change, and again, @elonmusk company, his choice," would be to provide users with the option to show or hide the For You section.

Alternatively, users could be granted control over the percentage of tweets displayed within the network versus those from outside the web within the For You section.
