Meta Platform Inc. (META.O) announced that the popular social media platform Instagram was back online for most users following a technical issue Sunday that caused disruptions for thousands of people.

A spokesperson from Meta addressed the situation, stating, "Earlier today, a technical issue caused some people to have trouble accessing Instagram. We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted," in response to inquiries from Reuters.

The company has not provided specific details on the number of customers affected by the Instagram global outage.

However, outage tracking website Downdetector.com recorded over 100,000 instances in the United States, 24,000 in Canada, and more than 56,000 in Britain during the disruption. At its peak, the outage impacted over 180,000 Instagram users.

The service disruption on Sunday began at approximately 5:45 p.m. EST (2145 GMT), with a gradual decrease in reports of disorders by 8:30 p.m. EST, with fewer than 7,000 incidents reported, said Downdetector.com, a reputable outage tracking service, collects status information from various sources, including user reports, to monitor and report on disruptions across different platforms and services.

Instagram Global Outage Did Not Affect Other Meta Services

In a welcome relief to users, it appears that Facebook, WhatsApp, and Horizon Worlds, all under the ownership of Meta, have remained unaffected as Instagram experienced a temporary outage, per The Verge.

Unlike the corporation's widespread crisis in 2021 due to a failed data center backbone, there are no indications of a similar problem on the horizon.

During the recent outage, there were no official notices on the Instagram support page or the platform's social media feeds, leaving users to speculate about the cause of the disruption.

Fortunately, the Instagram global outage has been resolved, allowing users to make posts once again and engage with the platform.

Instagram acknowledged the issue on Twitter, stating, "Instagram is back! Sorry for the trouble - we had a brief outage earlier and resolved the issue that caused it."

Instagram Allegedly Building an App to Compete with Twitter

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, reportedly revealed its plans to develop a text-based discussion app during a private conference attended by select individuals. Alleged screenshots of the upcoming app suggest it will feature a user interface resembling Twitter, according to Cointelegraph.

Lia Haberman, a professor specializing in influencer marketing and social media at UC Los Angeles Extension, uncovered Instagram's plans to compete with Twitter. Haberman asserts that the text-based app will be decentralized and operate independently from Instagram, although it will be built on the existing platform.

Users can expand their networks by sharing content with other decentralized social media platforms, including Mastodon.

Emulating Twitter's format, the future app will offer a consolidated feed where users can browse posts from their favorite accounts and those they follow. All textual updates will be subject to a 500-character limit.

While the Instagram competitor will function autonomously, users can leverage their existing controls and account security settings, such as blocklisting specific accounts and keywords.

Bloomberg reporter Sarah Frier has independently verified the existence of Instagram's plans to develop a Twitter-like app through insider sources within the company.

Meta's official announcement in March stated, "We are exploring the development of a separate decentralized social network for exchanging text updates."
