Tina Turner's Legendary Musical Career
Tina Turner has one of the most stellar careers of any performer in the entire entertainment industry, from hit singles to concerts, TV, film, and Broadway. She was a true multimedia star but is best remembered for her music.
She debuted under the name Tina Turner in 1960, but before that, she was a member of Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm in 1957. This would lead to some of her biggest hits, including "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", "River Deep - Mountain High," and "Nutbush City Limits."
She was with Ike until 1976 and admitted that she was a survivor of domestic abuse. After the split, she struggled a bit until the release of her fifth solo album "Private Dancer," which revitalized her career.
Its lead single "Let's Stay Together" was a huge success, but her second single from the album, "What's Love Got to Do With It," was her most iconic song yet, spending three weeks at #1 in the US. It would also score her Grammys for Record and Song of the Year.
The music icon would be nominated for a Grammy award a total of 28 times, winning nine of them. The album itself spent 11 weeks at #3, behind Prince's "Purple Rain" and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's "Born in the USA" albums.
She would make her acting debut in 1985 with "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" with her memorable performance as Aunty Entity, the ruthless leader of Bartertown. She made the film very memorable and her line, "Welcome to another edition of Thunderdome!" became quite iconic and synonymous with the film.
