Ron DeSantis has now announced that he is running for president in 2024. However, he will be hounded by controversial policies that might not endear him outside his far-right base.

His culture war policies which he dubbed as "anti-woke" has gained much criticism, though it has emboldened other far-right politicians in other states to copy his policies, which many say might be a violation of the First Amendment or freedom of Speech, despite DeSantis claiming Florida has the most freedom of any state in the country.

Ron DeSantis Policies That May Cost Him the Presidency in 2024

The Florida governor has made a name for himself thanks to several controversial policies, signing controversial laws which experts say may be unconstitutional and undermines the civil rights movement. Here are five of his most controversial ones:

Don't Say Gay

The Don't Say Gay Law is probably the most infamous piece of legislation Ron DeSantis has signed. It bans any reference to LGBTQ people in schools, forcing LGBTQ teachers to hide who they are, and has even marginalized LGBTQ students even more. These policies sparked protests all over Florida and according to People Magazine, this even led to its feud with Disney.

Initially, DeSantis signed a law that banned anything LGBTQ from children in third grade or younger. However, the banning of classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity has since been expanded to all grades, K-12.

Defunding Diversity Programs

DeSantis also signed into law a policy that defunded diversity programs from public colleges. This means that subjects relating to race and gender equality will not be funded in government-funded universities and colleges, even historically black colleges and women's colleges.

Rolling Stone pointed out that while DeSantis claims that Florida is #1 in educational freedom, his policies that crack down on these freedoms say otherwise. This has even led protesters to occupy the governor and vice governor's office, in addition to the expansion of Don't Say Gay. This also led to the NAACP issuing a travel advisory against Florida.

Feud With Disney

Disney has long been one of Florida's biggest employers, as well as its biggest taxpayer. However, DeSantis is feuding with the company over its opposition to Don't Say Gay. In retaliation for the media giant's criticism of his policies, DeSantis took back control of the independent improvement district under Disney's control. However, Disney outmaneuvered the Florida governor and in what legal experts call a genius move, took back control of the district for the time being and forcing Florida into a protracted legal battle.

Controversial Immigration Policies

Ron DeSantis also signed a bill that requires businesses with over 20 workers to check for documents. It also requires hospitals to check the legal status of patients. While it has not yet taken effect, farms and construction sites all over Florida are now empty, with Latino truckers boycotting the state. Much like his Disney feud, this one could also end up negatively impacting the state's economy.

Busing Migrants

While Florida might experience economic repercussions with the last two, DeSantis himself might face some legal trouble with this last one as a Texas sheriff is now investigating him for taking migrants from a Texas migrant shelter and sending them to Martha's Vineyard for a political stunt.

DeSantis brushed off the investigation and even expanded the program, continuing to bus migrants from Texas and into blue states or cities controlled by Democrats. Many are calling this a political stunt to curry favor from his white conservative base, though he might get investigated for kidnapping as many of these migrants are tricked into getting bused, such as the immigrants that were sent to Martha's Vineyard.
