Donald Trump Caught On Tape Talking About Classified Document He Kept After Leaving White House
Ex-President Donald Trump is currently being investigated for keeping classified documents from his time as POTUS. Now, a new Trump tape has leaked, and he was talking about these classified documents openly.
That document that Trump talked about in the new Trump tape was about a potential attack on Iran. Multiple sources told CNN that the tape undercuts his argument that he had already declassified everything. The former president has repeatedly claimed that even if he is not the president anymore, he could still declassify documents and can also declassify them instantly by thinking about it.
In the recording, Trump reportedly suggested he would like to share the information but was aware he was not able to do this as he was not president anymore and had limited ability to declassify records. One source told CNN that this discussion was a small part of a much longer meeting.
Special counsel Jack Smith, who is investigating Trump not just about his election interference and the events leading to January 6 but also the classified documents case, is treating the recording as an "important" piece of evidence as they build up a possible case against the ex-POTUS.
Prosecutors have now already asked witnesses about the recording, with one of Trump's highest national security officials, Gen. Mark Milley, being one of those who were asked about it.
New Donald Trump Tape Is Connected to Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows
The meeting where the recording took place happened on July 2021 at Trump's Bedminster, New Jersey golf course. In that new Trump tape, he was reportedly talking with two people working on Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows' autobiography, as well as a few aides. Meadows was not part of the meeting.

In that book, titled "Chief's Chief," Meadows recounted a story where Trump once recalled a four-page report produced by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley. According to The Guardian, it contained his plan to attack Iran, though it was unclear if this was the same meeting attended by Meadows' autobiographers.
Reports of that meeting showed that Trump was reportedly not happy about Milley advising him not to attack Iran during the final days of his presidency.
The ex-POTUS reportedly believed that the said classified document he took from the White House would undercut Milley's assertions.
Leaked Donald Trump Tape Surfaces After Trump Lawyers Sought Meeting With AG Merrick Garland
The news of the leaked Trump tape came just a week after the ex-president's attorneys sought an emergency meeting with Attorney General Merrick Garland regarding the Mar-a-Lago classified documents probe.
Trump's attorneys, led by John Rowley and James Trusty, claimed that their client was "being treated unfairly" and asked for a meeting to discuss the "ongoing injustice" that Special Counsel Jack Smith is doing.
NBC News pointed out that it was not clear what prompted the letter, though it may be a sign that the years-long probe is already winding down.
