Robert Downey Jr. News & Movies: Star Named Forbes Most Powerful Actor
There was a time when Robert Downey Jr. was better known for his struggle with drugs and alcohol than for acting.
Things changed in 2005 when he was cast in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," which may not have been a commercial success but it showed that Downey was back. It took "Iron Man" in 2008 to mark his comeback, Forbes noted.
Disney has made $4 billion in movies featuring Iron Man, and Forbes believes the actor made $75 million between June 2013 and June 2014. He is 10th on their overall list of top 100 celebrities, which makes him the most powerful actor.
Downey has also lent his name to smaller films, such as "Chef." Because of his cameo and promotion of the film, the indie has made $17 million.
Following Downey is Dwayne Johnson, who ranked at 23rd on the top 100 list, and Bradley Cooper came in third place.
Hugh Jackman ranked as the most powerful celebrity last year, but Forbes is sure he'll be back at the top next year, as the actor earned a share of the $700 million profit from "X-Men: Days of Future Past."
For Downey, the good news comes on the day after his son was arrested for cocaine possession. Indio Downey, who made an appearance in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," was in a passenger's seat when cops noticed he was smoking out of a pipe, according to TMZ.
Indio posted his $10,000 and was released just after midnight.
Downey released a statement to TMZ about his son.
"Unfortunately there's a genetic component to addiction, and Indio has likely inherited it," the statement said. "Also, there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we're all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he's capable of being. We're grateful to the Sheriff's department for their intervention and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale."
