Former President Donald Trump took to social media to state that he received a target letter from special counsel Jack Smith. He did not take it too kindly and blasted Joe Biden.

Trump admitted that he may soon be charged for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the events leading to January 6, saying, "Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden's DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment."

The former president's legal team received the target letter last Sunday, and it stated that Donald Trump could face charges in the election overturn attempt investigation, which also includes January 6, his efforts to plant fake electors, and his pressure campaign and intimidation of then-Vice President Mike Pence.

The target letter being sent to Trump made it clear that Jack Smith and his team are focusing on the ex-POTUS' actions in trying to overturn his election loss in 2020, and not just the efforts of his allies to overturn it, according to CNN.

So far, the Trump legal team has not yet responded to the target letter, though Trump is expected to decline the invitation the same way he did with the invitation from the House January 6 Committee previously.

Donald Trump has already faced two historic indictments earlier this year. The first happened in New York, where he is facing charges for paying hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels and not disclosing it; the second is the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case where he hid classified documents he took from the White House inside his Florida home.

What Are Target Letters and Should Donald Trump Comply?

Generally, target letters are sent by the DOJ as a warning to people being investigated for complex crimes that they are about to be charged with. There are two types of these target letters, with the first type usually being sent to somebody who has been subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury as a witness and would likely also be charged with a crime related to that testimony.

The second type is sent to a person who has not been subpoenaed as a witness but is still likely to be indicted by a grand jury. The Conversation pointed out that it is still unclear what type of letter Trump received, though it should be noted that Trump has not been subpoenaed for this particular investigation yet.

Donald Trump Still Claims Investigation Is Political

Meanwhile, as Trump faces another possible indictment, he is still trying to appeal to the Court of public opinion and insisted that this is "horrifying news" for the country, claiming that this is an attempt by President Joe Biden to arrest "his number one political opponent."

Trump is also facing a possible indictment in Fulton County, Georgia for his attempts to meddle in the elections in the state. That investigation runs parallel to Jack Smith's investigation.
