A disturbing incident unfolded in Tampa, Florida, where a chemistry student is accused of injecting an opioid "chemical agent" under a neighbor's front door, which subsequently led to the family, including their newborn baby, falling ill.

The incident began when Umar Abdullah and his pregnant wife moved into their new condo in June 2022 and initially received a warm welcome from their neighbors, according to the NY Post.

However, their downstairs neighbor, the Florida student, Xuming Li, began sending Abdullah complaints about sleep disturbances and noises from their unit.

The situation escalated over several months, with tensions rising between the parties. Eventually, Abdullah and his family started experiencing symptoms like dizziness and vomiting.

One particularly distressing moment was when Abdullah noticed his daughter's eyes filled with tears despite her not actually crying.

Family Notices Odd 'Chemical Odor' Through Their Home

Umar Abdullah shared his disturbing experience and recounted the chilling events in his Tampa, Florida, home.

Things turned sinister when a strange chemical odor permeated their living space in May. Despite their efforts to locate the source of the odor, they were unsuccessful, per the WSVN-TV.

The following month, Abdullah and his daughter began experiencing health issues. Abdullah's eyes started to burn, and his daughter suffered from coughing and vomiting.

Concerned for their well-being, Abdullah decided to take matters into his own hands. He installed a concealed camera outside their home to investigate the source of their troubles.

To their shock and disbelief, the camera footage revealed their neighbor, Xuming Li, injecting an unidentified substance through their front door on June 27.

The gravity of the situation became apparent to Abdullah, who realized that had they not discovered the incident through the camera footage, the consequences could have been even more severe.

Florida Student Arrested

Xuming Li, the Florida student responsible for injecting an opioid "chemical agent" into Umar Abdullah's home, has been arrested by Tampa police and is facing multiple felony charges, including possession of a controlled dangerous substance and burglary.

A hazardous materials test on the liquid chemical agent revealed that it contained a combination of methadone and hydrocodone, both opioid pain medications.

The arrest affidavit also mentioned that fire rescue respondents who initially visited the scene experienced skin irritation. However, USA TODAY noted that they were unaware of the cause at that time.

Xuming Li had been a former Ph.D. student in the Chemistry Department at the University of South Florida, as revealed by records. However, a spokesperson from USF confirmed that he was no longer enrolled there as of the summer.

Li's attorney stated that Li has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He is currently out on bond, and his next hearing is scheduled for December 5, NewsNation reports.

In addition to the legal charges, the Florida student is facing lawsuits from Umar Abdullah for domestic violence and from the condo association for breach of contract.

The attorney emphasized that all the facts of the case will be presented in due course.
