The Mayor of Margaritaville, Jimmy Buffett, legendary American singer-songwriter, is now dead as fans, family, and the music industry mourn his loss. His cause of death has now also been revealed.
Buffett's official website announced the music legend's passing on his official website, saying, "The beloved singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett passed away at his home in Sag Harbor, Long Island on Friday September 1, 2023, surrounded by family and friends." It then revealed that he had been battling a rare form of skin cancer before he died.
"Buffett, 76, had been fighting Merkel Cell Skin Cancer for four years. He continued to perform during treatment, playing his last show, a surprise appearance in Rhode Island, in early July," the website added.
According to The Spun, several fans reacted to Jimmy Buffett's passing by offering some skincare advice.
One fan wrote, "Wear a hat, sunscreen, and reapply often," while another also stated, "Even in Margaritaville, you need to wear sunscreen."
Another fan also chimed in, saying, "If you haven't been to a dermatologist recently, in Jimmy's honor, go. Please."
Fans Flock to Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Café To Toast the Late Music Legend
Following the news of the music legend's death, fans flocked to his various eateries and raised their glasses to toast the "Mayor of Margaritaville" in a rather fitting tribute.
Buffett owned various Margaritaville Café eateries around the US, and fans visited them in droves as soon as the news broke.
A Jimmy Buffett fan, Lee Jameson, spoke to NBC News and stated that she immediately headed to Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville at Universal City Walk in Los Angeles County when she heard his passing.
"We woke up, we heard the news, immediately got in the car, and headed straight to Margaritaville right when it opened," she said.
The restaurant chain is named after Buffett's hit song, and Lee Jamison said, "It's 11 a.m. here, but it's 5 o'clock somewhere," as a reference and tribute to the singer, who performed the song with singer Alan Jackson.
Fans also trooped to other Margaritaville locations around the US, including a Margaritaville Cafe in Key West, Florida, where fans left flowers and notes of condolences to the cafe's famous owner.
There are nearly 30 Margaritaville Cafe locations, all of which can be found in one continent, as there are locations not just in the United States but also in Canada, Mexico, and several Caribbean countries.
Celebrities React to Jimmy Buffett's Death
Several celebrities also reacted to the passing of the iconic singer, with fellow musician Toby Keith writing on social media, "The pirate has passed. RIP Jimmy Buffett. Tremendous influence on so many of us."
The Today Show co-host Hoda Kotb also reacted to her friend's passing, stating that Jimmy Buffett "personified joy" and "embodied goodness." Hoda then recalled introducing him to her mother, writing on social media, "I remember the time he met my mom at jazzfest and showered her with love ... like he knew her his whole life." The host added, "Bet he did that millions of times to millions of people."
Country music legend Sheryl Crow described the late singer as a "bright light" and added that he has "a wonderful sense of humor and is always so warm. I will miss knowing he is on the planet. He is up there sailing the bright blue Caribbean!"
Former Beatles member and music legend Paul McCartney also reacted to the passing and stated, "Right up to the last minute his eyes still twinkled with a humour that said, 'I love this world and I'm going to enjoy every minute of it.'"
"So many of us will miss Jimmy and his tremendous personality. His love for us all, and for mankind as a whole," added the legendary Beatle.
