Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr. was arrested on Monday on domestic violence charges in New York, as reported by the New York Police Department.

The charges stem from an alleged assault on a woman at a New York hotel, according to USA TODAY.

Upon arriving at the scene, the NYPD stated that officers were informed of a 26-year-old female who had sustained a laceration to the right side of her face and complained of neck pain.

Preliminary investigations indicated that a known individual had assaulted her multiple times on her body and had placed his hands around her neck.

Kevin Porter Jr., who is 23 years old, faces charges of assault and strangulation, both of which are felonies. The woman was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

The Houston Rockets acknowledged their awareness of the alleged incident but did not comment further.

Through spokesperson Mike Bass, the NBA confirmed that they are in contact with the Houston Rockets and are actively gathering more information regarding the situation.

Kevit Porter Jr. Assault and Domestic Violence

The alleged incident involving Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr. occurred at approximately 6:45 am at the Millennium Hilton near the United Nations in Manhattan, according to the New York Police Department.

As of Monday afternoon, Porter remained in police custody, and it was unclear if he had legal representation who could speak on his behalf, per ESPN.

While the NBA conducts its own investigation into the matter, the Rockets cannot impose any immediate punishment, including suspension, on Porter.

In their statement, the Rockets mentioned gathering information about the situation but did not provide further details.

Under the league's domestic violence policy, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has the authority to place a player on administrative leave with pay for a "reasonable period of time" based on the findings of the case.

Depending on the outcome, the commissioner can take various disciplinary actions, including fines, suspensions, or even dismissal from any further association with the league and its teams, in cases of violations of the domestic violence policy.

Kevit Porter Jr. Career

Kevin Porter Jr., a first-round draft pick in 2019, has played four seasons in the NBA.

He secured a lucrative four-year extension with the Houston Rockets last year after an impressive season where he averaged 19.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game, AP reports.

However, Porter's professional career has been overshadowed by off-court incidents. In November 2020, while playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, he was arrested following a single-vehicle crash. A loaded handgun and marijuana were found in his car.

Porter claimed he was unaware of the gun's presence, and the charges against him were eventually dismissed.

The Cavaliers subsequently traded Porter to the Rockets after an incident where he reportedly became agitated with the team's general manager upon learning that his locker had been relocated to accommodate a newly acquired player.

Kevin Porter Jr. faced a $50,000 fine from the NBA for violating the league's COVID-19 health and safety protocols by visiting a Miami strip club in April 2021.

Furthermore, the Rockets suspended him in January 2022 for one game after then-coach Stephen Silas disclosed that Porter had engaged in a "spirited debate" and "lost his temper" at halftime.
