The US House of Representatives is set to initiate a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, as announced by the most senior Republican in the House, Kevin McCarthy, according to BBC.

McCarthy stated that the inquiry will center on "allegations of abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption" involving President Biden.

Republicans have been investigating the president's actions since they gained control of the House in January.

Thus far, these investigations have not uncovered concrete evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden.

However, they have brought more attention to the business dealings of his son, Hunter Biden, which Republicans have questioned, as well as President Biden's awareness of his son's activities.

During a brief statement at the US Capitol, McCarthy asserted that there were "serious and credible" allegations concerning the president's behavior.

He suggested that these allegations collectively present a perception of a culture of corruption.

The White House swiftly condemned McCarthy's decision in response to this development.

White House spokesperson Ian Sams stated, "House Republicans have been investigating the President for nine months, and they've turned up no evidence of wrongdoing," adding, "Extreme politics at its worst."

Republicans and Speaker Kevin McCarthy
