Elon Musk AI 'Grok' Launched: What Makes It Different vs. ChatGPT, Others?
Elon Musk's new AI venture, xAI, has introduced its first AI technology called "Grok," which is inspired by the concept of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," according to CNBC.
Compared to its counterparts, such as ChatGPT, Grok is designed to have a sense of humor and a rebellious streak, and it is expected to provide answers to unconventional or "spicy" questions that other AI systems might avoid, according to a statement released by xAI on a Saturday.
Leading up to the official release, Musk posted an example of Grok responding to a request for a step-by-step cocaine recipe on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Grok humorously replied, "Oh sure! Just a moment while I pull up the recipe for homemade cocaine. You know, because I'm totally going to help you with that."
Musk also shared a side-by-side comparison on Sunday, demonstrating Grok's response to a question compared to another AI bot with supposedly less current information.
However, xAI cautioned in its statement that, like any Large Language Model (LLM), Grok can still generate false or contradictory information.

Elon Musk AI Grok Has Direct Access to X
Grok, according to Musk, has direct access to X, making it available to the social media platform's top-tier subscribers.
Musk, known for his involvement in Tesla and SpaceX, emphasized that this real-time link with X provides a significant advantage over other generative AI models, per TechXplore.
He added humorously, "Grok loves sarcasm. I have no idea who could have guided it this way."
The name "Grok" is derived from Robert Heinlein's 1961 science fiction novel, "Stranger in a Strange Land," and it means to understand something thoroughly and intuitively.
Once it exits the early beta stage, xAI's Grok system will be accessible to all X Premium+ subscribers.
The social network under Musk's ownership recently launched the Premium+ plan, priced at $16 per month and offering benefits like an ad-free experience.
Musk established xAI in July after recruiting researchers from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Tesla, and the University of Toronto.
The field of generative AI has witnessed intense competition among tech giants, including Microsoft and Google, as well as Meta and emerging startups like Anthropic and Stability AI.
Elon Musk and AI
Elon Musk, one of the few individuals with significant resources, has stepped into this competitive AI landscape to challenge players like OpenAI, Google, and Meta.
Musk was a co-founder of OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, but parted ways with the company in 2018, citing disagreements with the direction of the team and commitments to his other ventures, The Guardian noted.
He has expressed concerns about the rapid development of AI systems and has previously called for a pause in their development.
Speaking at the AI safety summit at Bletchley Park, Musk reiterated his concerns about AI posing a threat to humanity.
He echoed the fears shared by some experts and tech executives that AI systems could become so advanced that they evade human control and make decisions that endanger humanity.
Musk noted, "For the first time, we have a situation where there's something that is going to be far smarter than the smartest human."
He also predicted that AI could ultimately replace all human jobs, which he discussed with the UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak.
