Detroit police announced on Wednesday that they have taken a suspect into custody in connection with the killing of Samantha Woll, the Michigan synagogue president.

In a statement, Police Chief James E. White said that the details of the investigation would remain confidential for now, according to CNN.

He emphasized that while this is a positive development for Ms. Woll's family, it does not mark the end of their work on this case.

According to a law enforcement source involved in the investigation, Woll's death is being treated as a result of a domestic dispute and not linked to extremism.

Despite this, the tragedy has deeply affected members of the Jewish community who are still coping with the deadly attacks on Israel by Hamas in early October.

These events have contributed to a rise in antisemitic incidents in the United States in the past month, following an already high number of such last year.

The identity of the suspect in Woll's killing has not been disclosed, and the charges they may face remain unclear.

Discovery of Michigan Synagogue President's Body

Samantha Woll, a 40-year-old political strategist and a Michigan synagogue president, was found unresponsive outside her home on October 21 at 6:30 AM.

Initial reports suggested that she had been stabbed inside her house, then emerged outside and collapsed, based on a trail of blood at the scene.

This shocking incident in the upscale Lafayette Park neighborhood raised concerns that Woll might have been targeted due to tensions related to the Israel-Hamas war.

Woll, who served as the president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue, was actively involved in various Jewish organizations and was a co-founder of the Muslim-Jewish Forum of Detroit.

During a press conference last month, Police Chief White dismissed speculations that the incident was a hate crime, stating that they believe it was not motivated by antisemitism and that the suspect acted alone, per Fox News.

He pointed out that there were no signs of forced entry, and Woll had her phone and ID with her. She had attended a wedding the night before and returned home around 12:30 AM.

The investigation was focused on Woll's route home, with law enforcement reviewing street cameras for potential clues.

White's office is collaborating with the FBI and the Michigan State Police in the ongoing probe.

Approximately 1,000 people gathered for Samantha Woll's funeral on October 23, ABC 10 noted.

Woll had previously worked for US Rep. Elissa Slotkin and had been involved in the political campaign of Attorney Dana Nessel, both of whom are Democrats.

Woll, a native of the Detroit area and a University of Michigan graduate, became the president of the board of directors at Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue in 2022.

Mourners at her funeral noted the diverse composition of the crowd, representing people from various religious backgrounds, which friends and family felt symbolized who Woll was.

She received recognition for her interfaith work, even from Muslim advocacy groups. Family members highlighted her efforts to connect with various movements, including Black Lives Matter.

Colleagues remembered the Michigan synagogue president's love for travel, the arts, and her "infectious smile" that could light up a room. The service included moments of humor, including jokes about her food allergies and her habit of giving away items when complimented.

Samantha Woll's sister, Monica Woll Rosen, shared that her final text message was a heart sent to a friend, reflecting her caring nature.

"A light has gone out in Detroit, in our hearts, for our people, for the world," Monica stated.
