Tensions are high on the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti as the former sent more troops near the border and accused the latter of multiple border violations. This is the latest dispute between the two countries on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola.

According to the Associated Press, the accusation came a few days after an armed confrontation between Dominican soldiers and members of a Haitian environmental government brigade happened near the two Caribbean countries' shared border. Dominican Republic Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez held a news conference about it on Thursday.

"What happened is a flagrant violation of Dominican territory," Alvarez stated at the news conference. "We make a strong call to the Haitian authorities to assume control of order in their territory and avoid situations that continue to aggravate the already delicate situation."

The standoff was brief and it reportedly was caused by an "apparent confusion over border limits." It happened last Tuesday near the northern part of the Dominican Republic-Haiti border where over 300 concrete barriers have been built.

Meanwhile, Haiti declined to comment on the armed standoff but did release a statement accusing Dominican soldiers of violating Haitian territory. The country's Foreign Affairs Minister Jean Victor Généus did speak with Alvarez regarding the issue and both sides agreed to "try and calm tensions to avoid further escalation."

Haiti Media Reported That the Dominican Republic Started the Armed Standoff

Dominican Republic official Homero Figueroa stated on social media that the incident did not escalate but this caused the government to take "preventive measures" and send more Dominican troops to the border, Now, more troops and vehicles are patrolling the area,

"The situation seems to be due to an apparent misunderstanding by Haitian citizens regarding the border limits that separate both countries," said the Dominican Republic spokesperson. He added that t the Dominican Army "has full authority to patrol this area."

However, according to Yahoo! News, Haitian media are disputing this claim that Haiti trespassed on Dominican territory. They claimed that "Dominican soldiers had crossed the border into Haiti and pointed guns at locals."

Videos are circling of a helicopter circling around while troops from both countries are on either side of a border wall while black smoke is billowing from some burned tires.

Dominican Republic's Border Wall Added to Tensions With Haiti

The confrontation between troops from the Dominican Republic and Haiti happened in an area known as Pyramid 13, which is near the Haitian city of Ounanaminthe. Currently, this is also where the Dominican Republic is building a wall to keep Haitians out.

However, according to The Miami Herald, this wall that the Dominicans were building was also what led to the confusion where the border between the two countries started, thus leading to the confrontation.

While the wall itself faces Haiti, both sides are actually within Dominican territory, thus confusing some Haitians who claimed that t the area on the side of the wall facing Haiti is a no-man's-land. It remains unclear how far away the wall actually is from the Haitian border.
