Paul Pelosi Attacker David DePape Found Guilty of Attacking Nancy Pelosi's Husband With a Hammer
A verdict has been reached in the Paul Pelosi attack case as Trump supporter and conspiracy theorist David DePape was convicted by a federal jury which found him guilty of not just attacking the elderly California businessman with a hammer in front of police, but also of attempting to kidnap former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the wife of victim Paul Pelosi.
The jury began its deliberations on Wednesday afternoon before reaching their verdict on late Thursday morning. DePape was charged with attempted kidnapping and assault on account of a federal official's performance of official duties and was found guilty of both.
According to ABC News, DePape could face a maximum sentence of 20 years and 30 years, respectively, as he pleaded not guilty to either charge. He may also face deportation as he is not a US citizen, but a Canadian.
"What this guilty verdict on all counts sends is a clear message that regardless of what your beliefs are, what you cannot do is physically attack a member of Congress or their immediate family for their performance in their job," said US Northern District of California Ismail Ramsey during a press conference shortly after the verdict was read. "We look forward to the sentencing phase of this litigation."
David DePape Apologizes for Hurting Paul Pelosi
Paul Pelosi, already 83 years old, suffered a fractured skull after David DePape repeatedly hit him in the head with a hammer in the early morning hours of October 28, 2022, just a few days before the 2022 midterm elections.
Taking to the stand after the verdict was announced, DePape issued an apology to his elderly victim, telling him that he only broke into the Pelosi home to ask Rep Nancy Pelosi about the Russian interference in the 2016 election, adding that Paul was "never my target."

"I'm sorry that he got hurt," he said, according to the Associated Press. "I reacted because my plan was basically ruined."
This was a reference to Nancy Pelosi not being home when he broke into the Pelosis' San Francisco home and the fact that Paul Pelosi managed to call 911 and was able to stall DePape until police arrived at the scene.
In his testimony, DePape admitted that he was targeting Nancy Pelosi and planned to kidnap her to make her admit to corruption, telling the court, "If she lied, I would break her kneecaps."
Nancy Pelosi and Paul Pelosi Release Statement After David DePape's Guilty Verdict
Both Paul and Nancy Pelosi released a statement shortly after the federal jury found David DePape guilty. They stated that they were "deeply grateful for the outpouring of prayers and warm wishes for Mr. Pelosi from so many across the country during this difficult time."
"The Pelosi family is very proud of their Pop, who demonstrated extraordinary composure and courage on the night of the attack a year ago and in the courtroom this week," the statement continued." Thankfully, Mr. Pelosi continues to make progress in his recovery."
