John Turscak, an inmate at FCI Tucson, has now been charged for allegedly stabbing fellow inmate Derek Chauvin, who is best known as the Minneapolis police officer who killed George Floyd with the use of excessive force.

According to ABC-7, it was 52-year-old John Turscak who was responsible for stabbing the former Minneapolis, Minnesota police officer inside the correctional facility. Chauvin was reportedly stabbed 22 times by Turscak but managed to survive thanks to the quick response by prison staff.

Turscak allegedly used an improvised knife he made to stab the man found guilty of wrongfully killing George Floyd. Because of this, he has now been charged with attempted murder.

Chauvin is now in stable condition and is expected to survive the attack.

Chauvin was allegedly in the prison's law library when the attack happened. The suspected attacker allegedly approached him there and stabbed him. After prison security staff intervened, he reportedly told them that if they were not able to respond so quickly, Chauvin would have been dead. Officials noted that the attacker waived his Miranda Rights and said something different.

"At that time, TURSCAK denied wanting to kill D.C. However, TURSCAK stated that he had been thinking about assaulting D.C. for approximately one month because D.C. is a high-profile inmate. TURSCAK stated he saw an opportunity to assault D.C. in the law library," read the complaint, with "D.C." referring to Derek Chauvin. "Turscak stated that his attack of D.C. on Black Friday was symbolic with the Black Lives Matter movement and the Mexican Mafia criminal organization. D.C. received emergency medical treatment for his injuries at a local hospital."

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who prosecuted Chauvin, released a statement following the stabbing incident, saying that he was "sad to hear that Derek Chauvin was the target of violence."

John Turcak is currently spending 30 years in prison for carrying out crimes while working as a federal informant. With the Derek Chauvin stabbing, his prison time might soon be increased.

CBS News reported that he was recruited as part of a 1999 case against the Mexican Mafia and even helped bring the organization down. He joined it back in 1990 but turned to become an informant. He was sentenced in 2001.

As part of the Mexican Mafia, Turscak stated that he authorized "assaults of individuals for infractions of Mexican Mafia rules," and collected "taxes" from street gangs and drug dealers. He also admitted to murdering a man in Folsom Prison back in 1990.

Floyd had been complaining that he could not breathe, but Chauvin would not take his knee off of the back of Floyd's neck. This led to yet another death of a black man at the hands of a white police officer.

The video soon went viral and calls for racial justice and police reform echoed not just in the US but also other countries. It sparked global outrage and a wave of demonstrations against racial injustice and police use of force, as the BBC noted, eventually morphing into the Black Lives Matter movement.
