In an open field with tiny houses in every direction, there are 1,600 dogs in what Montserrat Oliver describes as the only favela for dogs located in Caxias do Sul.

The Mexican actress and host said that the Brazilian government passed a law four years ago that said that animals could not be mistreated.

"The government pays the salary of the eight employees that clean, feed and give water to the animals," said one of the workers. "And [they pay for] the 25 tons of food needed monthly. Everything else we get from donations from the community."

Oliver explained that the dogs were tied up, but it wasn't because of cruelty. The dogs might end up fighting each other, so this is a way to keep them safe.

None of the animals, which include cats, at the favela were born there. Instead, they were all abandoned. And the favela is a place where people can go to adopt a pet.

She was also touched by her guide's reaction when speaking about the law that made it illegal to kill these animals.

Oliver went around interacting with the animals, who were generally very happy to interact with her.

It was when her back was turned that a dog bit her. At about the three-minute mark of the video, Oliver has rolled up her pants to reveal the bite. Workers help disinfect it.

Instead of getting upset, Oliver felt bad for the dog.

"One of them bit me. He wasn't too friendly," she said. "But poor thing."

She continued to describe the situation and said the workers told her to head to the hospital, which was just something she did not want to do.

She later shared a picture of the bite on her Twitter account, which she later described as a "little accident."
