A California teen, Alan Filion, is facing charges in Florida, described as a "serial swatter" responsible for numerous swatting incidents and bomb threats across the United States, according to ABC 7.

Known as the serial swatter, the 17-year-old was extradited to Florida on January 30, accused of a swatting incident targeting a mosque in Sanford.

Swatting involves making a false report to the police, intending to lure law enforcement to a location under the pretext of a violent crime.

This dangerous hoax has been on the FBI's radar for almost two decades and has recently escalated, targeting not only celebrities but also federal judges, lawmakers, state capitol buildings, and even the White House.

The California teen's alleged involvement in a May 2023 swatting incident at the Masjid Al Hayy Mosque in Sanford, Florida, raised significant concerns.

In the call to law enforcement, Filion threatened a mass shooting, claiming to possess a handgun and explosive devices.

The call, where gunfire was heard, prompted around 30 law enforcement officers to respond to the mosque.

The California teen's swatting activities extended beyond the mosque, targeting high schools, historically Black colleges, mosques, FBI offices, and even making threats to bomb military bases and the Pentagon.

Law enforcement, including the FBI and the Department of Justice, collaborated to trace the mosque 911 call back to Filion's home in Lancaster, California.

Legal Proceedings and Arrest of the 'Serial Swatter'

Following a search warrant executed at Filion's residence in July 2023, he was arrested on January 18, facing three felony charges of false reporting and a felony charge of unlawful use of a two-way communication device, CNN reports.

Each charge accuses the serial swatter of committing acts while facilitating or furthering an act of terrorism and while showing prejudice.

Filion, the California teen serial swatter who was charged as an adult, has entered a plea of not guilty and remains in custody.

Filion's arrest concludes a multi-agency manhunt, with authorities alleging his responsibility for swatting attacks on various institutions and figures.

The investigation into Filion's activities involved online platforms, including a YouTube channel, Discord chats, and usernames related to "The Lord of the Rings," leading authorities to his doorstep.

Online Clues and Investigations Leading to California Teen's Arrest

The investigation revealed that Filion used usernames related to J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings," such as "Nazgul Swattings," "Paimon Arnum," and "Dushatar."

Private investigator Brad "Cafrozed" Dennis played a crucial role in parallel investigations, reaching out to the California teen on a peer-to-peer chatting service called Tox, WIRED noted.

This interaction exposed Filion's IP address and the username "Paimon Arnum," previously unknown to law enforcement.

The California teen's association with swatting channels and Lord of the Rings-related content across various online platforms further linked him to the alleged crimes.

Subpoenas to Discord and Google confirmed shared residential IP addresses and a subsequent search warrant executed in July seized Filion's phones and computers, revealing Telegram activity related to swatting attacks.

In court on Wednesday, Filion, the California teen, faced charges and is currently held without bond.

The legal proceedings shed light on the intricate investigations that led to the arrest of the alleged serial swatter, emphasizing the severity of swatting incidents and the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies to bring individuals responsible to justice.
