The trial date for the federal election subversion case against former President Donald Trump in Washington, DC, has been postponed, according to a recent court order.

The original Trump criminal case trial date set for March 4 has been put on hold as a federal appeals court considers Trump's argument for immunity from prosecution based on his role as president leading up to the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, according to CNN.

The delay, not officially confirmed until US District Judge Tanya Chutkan's order on Friday, aligns with Trump's ongoing efforts to push the trial beyond the 2024 presidential election.

However, it remains uncertain whether Trump will succeed in delaying the trial until after the November vote.

Chutkan's Decision and Potential Trial Duration

Judge Chutkan's decision to postpone Donald Trump criminal case trial was anticipated given the former president's pursuit of immunity from charges related to his attempts to subvert the 2020 election.

Chutkan, in a brief order, indicated that she would reschedule the trial "if and when" the immunity issue is resolved.

"I do not know what my schedule will be in mid-April," the judge said.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has indicated that the judge is awaiting outcomes in other cases, with a potential schedule update expected after the next hearing on February 15.

The DC Circuit Court of Appeals is considering Trump's immunity argument, and the decision, with no fixed deadline, could be appealed to the Supreme Court.

Depending on the length of the delay in the Washington trial and the timing of the New York trial, Trump's federal trial in Florida on charges related to hoarding national security documents after leaving the White House may also face postponement.

The documents trial is tentatively scheduled for May 20.

Meanwhile, a Georgia trial on charges of conspiracy to interfere with the 2020 election involving Trump and others has yet to be scheduled.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has proposed an August 5 trial date, potentially overlapping with the election.
