A heartbreaking incident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon when a 17-year-old boy, identified as Chase Ditter, was shot and killed by a police officer during a welfare check at a residence in Columbus, Nebraska, according to USA Today.

The Nebraska State Patrol Special Investigations Team is now diligently probing the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

Columbus, a city on Nebraska's eastern side with a population of approximately 24,000, lies around 90 miles west of Omaha.

State Patrol Provides Details Following Nebraska Teen's Fatal Shooting

The Columbus Police Department had initiated the welfare check in response to a report of potential self-harm concerning the Nebraska teen Chase Ditter, per Nebraska State Patrol's website.

Nebraska police officers arrived at the residence located in the 3600 block of 39th Avenue in Columbus at around 1 PM.

The encounter with the subject, Nebraska teen Chase Ditter, escalated when it was discovered that he was in possession of a knife.

During the interaction, a Nebraska police officer discharged their duty weapon, striking Ditter.

Simultaneously, another officer deployed a taser in an attempt to manage the situation.

Unfortunately, the Nebraska teen succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Columbus Police Department promptly requested the Nebraska State Patrol to conduct an investigation into the incident, with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) Special Investigations Team leading the in-custody death investigation.

Both officers involved in the tragic event have been on administrative leave pending the outcome of the ongoing NSP investigation.

Columbus Public Schools took precautionary measures following the incident, placing two nearby schools, Lost Creek Elementary, and Columbus High School, in "secure status" after being alerted by the Nebraska police about the nearby activity.

Nicole Anderson, a spokesperson for Columbus Public Schools, revealed that the victim, Chase Ditter, was a student at Columbus High School and was set to graduate in May, NBC News reports.

Describing the Nebraska teen as an "extremely intelligent and accomplished student," his obituary highlighted his plans to attend the Rochester Institute of Technology in the fall for a cybersecurity master's program.

The young talent served as the team programmer for his school's robotics team held an officer position in the Skills USA program and participated in multiple math competitions.

Ditter was not only academically inclined but also an enthusiastic volunteer, a traveler, and someone who had embarked on flight training, as mentioned in his obituary.

Despite facing challenges with depression since the pandemic, Ditter had sought help from healthcare professionals and was "very much looking forward to his future."

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting questions about the circumstances that led to the use of deadly force during a welfare check.
