Michael Strahan GMA News: Homeless Man Threatens to Kill 'Live! With Kelly and Michael' Star at ABC Studios in New York
A 25-year-old homeless man was arrested in front of ABC's "Good Morning America" studios Tuesday morning after he tried to "kill Michael Strahan."
The suspect, who has been identified as Andre Johnson, allegedly pulled out a knife and attempted to stab a security guard near the ABC building in Times Square around 8 a.m. Later, he told police that he planned to "kill Michael Strahan," a former NFL star and the co-host of "Live! With Kelly and Michael," police sources told FOX411.
"The suspect went to the entrance of ABC studios and demanded that security let him into the studio. He was denied entrance, at which time he showed a knife. He [then] attempted to stab a security guard," said officials.
However, a rep for ABC explained that a New York police officer quickly stepped in to help. Johnson was then subdued and arrested. He was slapped with charges of felony attempted assault, menacing in the second degree and criminal possession of weapon, reports TMZ.
ABC News also issued a statement following the bizarre occurrence. "There was an incident in Times Square, an individual lunged at one of our employees and was heroically tackled by a police officer. We understand the man was taken in for psychiatric evaluation," said Heather Riley, Senior Publicity Director at ABC News, according to E! News. "It was a scary situation but thanks to the fast actions of NYPD the situation was quickly under control. Michael was never in any danger."
Johnson was reportedly still in jail as of Wednesday morning.
Strahan, a 42-year-old NFL Hall of Famer, has not issued a statement about the incident.
Before joining Kelly Ripa as a host on ABC, Strahan played 15 seasons with the New York Giants. He also joined the cast of ABC's "Good Morning America" back in April.
