Facebook Outage: Elon Musk Trolls Meta After Company's Sites Go Down
X CEO Elon Musk has jokes after several services from rival company Meta, such as Facebook and Instagram, went out for over an hour and a half, with netizens around the world being shocked that they cannot log into Facebook, Messenger, or Instagram.
Musk took to his social media site and poked fun at his rivals, tweeting, "If you're reading this post, it's because our servers are working."
Meanwhile, X's official account also mocked its rival, Facebook, by tweeting out, "We know why you're all here rn."
The X CEO continued posting memes and poking fun at Facebook's problems, with several users taking to Twitter to complain about Facebook and Instagram being unavailable. The site and app did get back on after over an hour.
According to Unilad, unlike Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram, Meta's other messaging app, WhatsApp, did not appear to experience the same disruptions. However, there were reports that the app also experienced some problems on Tuesday.
Thousands of Facebook Users Reported Problems as Meta Sites Went Down Temporarily
Facebook users all over the world reported various problems, such as being suddenly logged out of Facebook or Instagram. When they tried logging back in, they were met with an error message that read, "Something went wrong. Please try again." This prompted many to fear that their accounts may have been hacked, only to soon find out that almost all of Meta's services were down.
The internet down monitoring service, Down Detector, found that the error reports sparked at around 10:25 AM ET. At around 10:40 AM ET, the site received over 500,000 error reports, with around 76% of the problems reported revolving around Facebook users having trouble logging into the site.

According to Variety, Meta was well aware of the problem, with the Facebook Login Status page reporting "major disruptions," alongside a statement that read, "We are aware of an issue impacting Facebook Login. Our engineering teams are actively looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible."
Over an hour later, the page announced that Facebook Login services "are in the process of being restored. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused."
Technical Issue Caused Facebook Outage, But Cyber Attack Not Ruled Out
Meta spokesman Andy Stone tweeted in a post on X that they had "resolved the issue as quickly as possible" after a "technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services."
A Facebook insider spoke with The Daily Mail and stated that the issue stemmed from internal tools. However, with Super Tuesday happening in the United States, many also suggested it was a "cyberattack."
However, Jake Moore, tech expert and security advisor at ESET, told the Daily Mail that a cyberattack is unlikely but not impossible, telling the outlet that Facebook has a history of going down, but this could be for a long list of reasons. Although highly unlikely to be a cyberattack, it can never be fully ruled out, but it is far more likely to be yet another internal network problem."
