Honduras: Ex-President Juan Orlando Hernandez's Wife, Ana Garcia de Hernandez, Running for Presidency After Husband's US Conviction
Former Honduras First Lady Ana Garcia de Hernandez has announced that she is running for her country's presidency in 2025. However, this came after a US court convicted her husband, disgraced former President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who was convicted of drug trafficking charges after he received money from the drug cartels, including from El Chapo and his Sinaloa Cartel.
US Federal prosecutors have stated in court that under the Hernandez administration, Honduras became a "Narco State" as the most powerful man in the country, Juan Orlando Hernandez, made deals with drug cartels to cement his hold on office. The trial was widely followed across Honduras, with many citizens celebrating the decision by the US court against their former president.
Despite this, his first lady, Ana Garcia de Hernandez, is still running, announcing her candidacy for the 2025 elections via a press conference. She says she plans to get the nomination of the conservative National Party, which her husband belongs to.
"I want to tell you that from this moment I will start an active and proactive fight for the world to know the injustice that was committed," she said in her announcement. "I know what has to be done, I know the job, I know the dedication and the fight my husband has had every day and I know Honduras' great needs and one of the greatest is the injustice we've just seen."
The Associated Press noted that former President Juan Orlando Hernandez could face life imprisonment in the US. While convicted, he has not been sentenced yet, and he remains in jail while awaiting sentencing. He has maintained his innocence throughout the legal proceedings.

Former Honduras First Lady Ana Garcia de Hernandez Plans To Launch a 'Crusade for Justice'
As for her plans should she win the presidency next year, it may just be centered around her husband, former President Juan Orlando Hernandez. During that same press conference, she vowed to start a "crusade for justice" in his defense.
According to VOA News, however, she would still need to win the National Party's primary election before she could run in the general election that is scheduled to happen in November 2025.
Opponents of her husband, however, remain unconvinced with her announcement, with LIBRE Party lawmaker Marco Eliud Girón noting that she probably knew of her husband's ties to drug traffickers and that she has entered politics to reduce her own legal exposure.
Honduras Arrests Generals Who Testified in Defense of Former President Juan Orlando Hernandez
Meanwhile, a military court in Honduras ordered the arrest of two generals for traveling to New York without authorization. According to La Prensa Latina, they went to the US to testify in the drug trafficking trial against former President Juan Orlando Hernandez as the defense's witnesses.
Generals Willy Joel Oseguera and Tulio Armando Romero were arrested just a few days removed from their testimony in New York. The two generals were still active and still had to follow procedures whenever they had to leave Honduras, according to military laws and regulations, which deemed their appearance in New York a violation of the law.
