Kamala Harris: Clueless VP Claps, Smiles to Puerto Rico Protest Song Until Aide Translate It
Vice President Kamala Harris found herself clapping along with a smile as a man sang in Spanish outside a community center in Puerto Rico last week, unaware of the song's message until later.
The 59-year-old VP had visited the Goyoco community center in San Juan before encountering the singing protester in the courtyard. To be friendly, Harris nodded and clapped along with the protest song, only to stop abruptly when an aide informed her of its meaning, according to the New York Post.
The lyrics questioned the purpose of her visit, with the protester expressing curiosity about her thoughts on the territory's status. The Puerto Rico protest song also included calls for the liberation of Palestine and Haiti. Harris was accompanied by Mariana Reyes, executive director at La Goyco, and Frankie Miranda, president of the Hispanic Federation.
Harris' visit coincided with a renewed Democratic campaign targeting Latino voters ahead of the upcoming November US elections, although Puerto Ricans lack Electoral College votes for the presidency.

VP Harris Tours Puerto Rico, Addresses Hurricane Recovery Efforts
Kamala Harris visited the Goyoco community center in San Juan's Santurce neighborhood after speaking in Puerto Rico's capital. She toured the facility and met with center staff and community leaders.
As her motorcade arrived, it encountered a group of loud demonstrators and onlookers on the sidewalk, Fox News reports. One protester held a sign labeling Harris as a "war criminal," while another criticized the USA and Israel.
Before her visit to the community center, Harris inspected a residential home outside San Juan that had been damaged during Hurricane Maria. Through a federal program, the home was equipped with solar panels and water tanks.
She was accompanied by Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, Deputy Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Adrianne Todman, and Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi.
Harris emphasized the administration's commitment to Puerto Rico, stating they had invested over $140 billion.
She praised technological innovations aimed at making the island more resistant to hurricanes, highlighting the impact on families' quality of life and well-being.
Harris's Puerto Rico Trip Highlights Latino Voter Outreach
Kamala Harris makes her debut trip to Puerto Rico as vice president this Friday, as Democrats ramp up efforts to engage Latino voters ahead of the 2024 election, CBS News noted. The visit aims to spotlight the administration's support for the island's recovery and the global significance of Puerto Rican culture.
Recent CBS News polling from late February reveals a notable 12-point drop in President Biden's Hispanic support since 2020, indicating a challenging trend for Democrats. In response, Democrats are initiating outreach efforts early to reverse this decline.
Clarissa Martinez De Castro, vice president of the Latino Vote Initiative at Unidos US, commended the proactive outreach strategy, emphasizing its departure from the usual last-minute approach.
Due to the island's territorial status, Puerto Ricans cannot vote in the general election, but they will have the opportunity to cast a symbolic ballot this November for the first time.
Julio Ricardo Varela, founder of Latino Rebels, interprets the visit as a clear message to Puerto Rican voters in swing states for 2024. He sees it as an effort to demonstrate care for the island and contrast the current administration's actions with those of the previous one.
