Police in Brazil have now announced that they have officially launched a probe into what may have been former President Jair Bolsonaro's latest attempt at escaping justice, which was staying at the Hungarian Embassy as investigations into his alleged coup attempt were going on.

The investigation came days after a bombshell report by The New York Times revealed that Bolsonaro stayed at the Hungarian Embassy for at least two nights, being escorted by security personnel and the Hungarian ambassador waiting on him during his stay.

This was a potential breach as Bolsonaro's passports were confiscated by police prior to the incident, so he would not have tried to flee Brazil if an arrest warrant had been issued. His stay at the Hungarian Embassy meant that police could not arrest him as the embassy was considered Hungarian territory, therefore they had no jurisdiction to arrest the former president.

A Federal Police source with knowledge of the investigation spoke with the Associated Press and confirmed that it was launched as a direct response to the New York Times report, which showed Bolsonaro captured on the embassy's CCTV footage arriving at and staying inside the embassy, with embassy staff waiting on him.

Hungary's autocrat, Viktor Orban, was a key ally of Bolsonaro, and the former Brazilian president also considers him a friend. There are speculations that Bolsonaro may have tried to seek Orban's help as investigations into his coup attempt were going on.

Bolsonaro has continued to claim that he did nothing wrong, with his lawyers saying in a statement, "In the days he was at the Hungarian embassy, by invitation, the former Brazilian president spoke to countless authorities from the friendly country for updates on the political scenarios of both nations."

The Relationship Between Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro and Hungary's Viktor Orban

Jair Bolsonaro and Viktor Orban are two of the most infamous members of the global right-wing movement, along with Donald Trump. Both have also been embraced by the US right, with Orban's restrictive anti-immigration and anti-LGBTQ measures being embraced by the MAGA movement, while Bolsonaro has been dubbed the "Trump of the Tropics."

As First Post also noted, the two are also good friends, with the Hungarian leader famously calling his Brazilian counterpart his "brother" back in 2022. Orban also called Bolsonaro a "hero" last year when they met in Buenos Aires during the inauguration of Argentina's new right-wing president, Javier Milei.

Jair Bolsonaro Trying To Get Passport Back To Visit Israel

Meanwhile, Bolsonaro himself is trying to go to Israel and he is now seeking to have his passport returned to him. With his stay at the Hungarian Embassy now being investigated as well, this planned trip is already raising a few eyebrows.

Bolsonaro's attorneys confirmed that the former president is planning to go to Israel next month, with his spokesperson stating, "The defense team of President [Jair Bolsonaro] petitioned the Supreme Court last Monday, on March 25, to request the return of the president's passport, albeit for a fixed period, with a view to accept an invitation to visit Israel next month."
