As many expected, the two Articles of Impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas was quickly junked by the Senate as soon as it arrived there. The trial in the Senate ended before it began as Senators did not find any reason to impeach Mayorkas.

A divided Republican Party in the House voted to impeach Mayorkas for political reasons, as Donald Trump had wanted to have a member of the Joe Biden administration impeached so he could have more things to attack his political rival with. The impeachment itself was described to be vague, and legal experts have said it did not have much grounds.

As CNN reported, there was not much drama when the Senate threw out the two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas, though the vote was mostly along party lines. Both articles of impeachment were then declared unconstitutional.

Nearly all Senate Republicans voted for the Alejandro Mayorkas impeachment to push through to trial, with Alaska Senate Republican Lisa Murkowski being the only holdout, voting "Present." However, the Democratic majority all voted "No," thus junking the impeachment.

The two junked articles of impeachment are for "willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law" and "breach of public trust," with the merits of the case being slammed as lacking substance and has been described as a "distraction from other election year messaging."

Constitutional experts have repeatedly pointed out that the Republicans' case and evidence against Mayorkas, the first Latino and immigrant to hold the job, "failed to clear that high bar" for impeachment.

Alejandro Mayorkas Impeachment 'Done for Good'

After the two articles of impeachment were junked, the Senate also voted to end the trial "sine die." According to NBC News, this means that the impeachment against the DHS secretary was done for good just less than 3 1/2 hours after it began.

White House spokesperson Ian Sams reacted to the junking of the impeachment, saying, "Once and for all, the Senate has rightly voted down this baseless impeachment that even conservative legal scholars said was unconstitutional."

"President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas will continue doing their jobs to keep America safe and pursue actual solutions at the border, and Congressional Republicans should join them, instead of wasting time on baseless political stunts while killing real bipartisan border security reforms," he added.

US Department of Homeland Security Reacts to Alejandro Mayorkas Impeachment Getting Thrown Out

Soon after the impeachment was trashed for good, DHS Spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg released a statement on Wednesday, saying, "As he has done throughout more than 20 years of dedicated public service, Secretary Mayorkas will continue working every day to enforce our laws and protect our country."

 "It's time for Congressional Republicans to support the Department's vital mission instead of wasting time playing political games and standing in the way of commonsense, bipartisan border reforms," she added.

It was noted that before the vote, Republicans tried running Donald Trump's infamous "Delay Delay Delay" tactic as they set up procedural hurdles, such as calling to adjourn until the end of the month, according to USA Today.
