Ryan Garcia Tests Positive for Banned Substance; Throws Upset Win Vs. Devin Haney Into Question
Ryan Garcia's massive upset win against Devin Haney has been put into question after the Latino boxer tested positive for a banned substance known as Ostarine. He was tested on the day before and after the fight that happened last month, and he tested positive for both.
According to ESPN, the samples from Garcia were taken around the fight but the results were not known until later. With the results now out, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association sent a letter to all parties about Ryan Garcia testing positive for the banned substance.
Ostarine is regarded as a performance-enhancing substance and is therefore banned in many sports, including boxing. Ryan Gracia now has ten days to request that his B-sample be tested, which may be used to dispute the results of his A-sample, which tested positive.
Garcia was also screened for 19-Norandrosterone with the tests, but it is still unknown if the substance was also found in the boxer's blood as its presence was not confirmed by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association yet.
"Everybody knows that I don't cheat," Garcia wrote in a social media post on X, formerly Twitter. "Never taken a steroid ... I don't even know where to get steroids. ... I barely take supplements. Big lies, I beat his ass."
The 25-year-old Latino boxer made a name for himself by flooring the favorite Haney thrice. However, his win was also controversial even before the doping allegations came in as Garcia failed to make weight and was heavier than his opponent, weighing in at 143.2 pounds for the WBC 140-pound title fight.
Because he failed to make weight for the fight, he was not able to win the WBC belt, with Haney retaining the title even though he lost the fight via knockout.

Devin Haney's Father Reacts to Ryan Garcia Testing Positive for Banned Substance
Haney used to be undefeated and only suffered the first loss of his career against Ryan Garcia. After Garcia failed to make weight and the doping scandal surfaced, Devin Haney's father, Devin Sr., was furious, according to Yahoo! Sports.
"You trying to hurt my baby. We played it fair," Devin Haney said. "We didn't do it like that. F*** boxing, this is some bulls***. I came from the streets. You scared of Devin on a level playing field. I feel f***ed up over this, he told Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix on Wednesday. "If you can brag about doing it, you shouldn't be on drugs."
What is Ostarine, the Banned Substance That Ryan Garcia Tested Positive To?
Osterine, also known as MK-2866, is banned in most sports as it is known for its muscle-building properties. While it has potential therapeutic applications in conditions like muscle loss and osteoporosis, it is still not approved by the FDA.
According to Marca, there are also risks in using the banned substance as it has adverse effects on cholesterol levels and heightened prostate cancer risk. It does have perceived benefits in muscle gain, physical performance enhancement, and bone mass preservation but prolonged usage may lead to the suppression of natural testosterone production.
