Donald Trump Trial: New Poll Finds 20% of Trump Supporters May Reconsider Vote If He Is Convicted
A new poll may have troubling news for Donald Trump, who is in a tight race against President Joe Biden. It found that a large percentage of Trump supporters might not vote for him should he be convicted as he faces a myriad of allegations, from his ongoing New York porn star hush money trial to his classified documents cast, as well as his January 6 and Georgia election interference cases.
A new ABC News/Ipsos poll produced by Langer Research Associates and conducted between April 25 to 30 found that while 80% of Trump voters will stand by him even if he was found guilty of his crimes, around 20% say they would reconsider voting for him.
Around 16% of those polled say that they would reconsider their support, while 4% are saying that they would totally withdraw their support from the embattled former president should he be convicted. In a very tight race with Biden for the White House, this could hurt Trump.
Democratic political strategist Brad Bannon spoke with Newsweek and stated that "the matchup between Biden and Trump could be a closely contested race, as tight as a tick on a hound drop."
"A Trump conviction could be all that the president needs to squeeze out a win over his predecessor. Trump is not doing himself any favors with his antics before, during, and after his days in court. If he loses in the trial court, he loses bigly in the court of public opinion," added Bannon.
So far, polls have been mixed regarding the Trump-Biden match-up, with Biden leading in some polls, while Trump had a narrow lead in others, just 46% to Biden's 44%. In that same poll, however, Biden led Trump among registered and likely voters.

This earned him the ire of e senior congressional Democrat James Clyburn of South Carolina, calling out Trump for likening the Biden administration to the Gestapo secret police of Nazi Germany. Clyburn admitted these comments were "incredible, but it's not surprising."
He added, Trump "is given to hyperbole on every subject that he ever approaches ... The country got off track after that 1876 election and we are approaching the same kinds of elements today" before accusing the former president of having an "understanding of this country that I thought we left behind more than 100 years ago. But as I watch things happen in the country today, I've been harkening back for some time now, to the 1876 presidential election, and how this country got off track after the civil war."
