Shakira Gets Major Win After Prosecutors Recommend 2nd Spain Tax Evasion Case Be Thrown Out
Shakira's Spain tax evasion saga may finally be over, and the Colombian music legend can finally breathe a sigh of relief after prosecutors recommended to a judge that her 2nd tax evasion case be thrown out. This may lead to her years-long battle against the Spanish tax system finally ending.
Spanish prosecutors who were investigating her for allegedly not paying 6.7 million euros ($7.2 million) in taxes on her 2018 income via an offshore company while she was still dating Spanish soccer star Gerard Pique have now asked an investigating judge to shelve the investigation into her.
According to the Associated Press, Spanish prosecutors. who previously brought the allegations of tax evasion against her. have told the judge in their filing that "there is not sufficient evidence" of a possible fiscal crime and therefore the case against Shakira must now be shelved.
The case itself has not been officially thrown out yet as it will still be up to the investigating judge to decide if the probe into the Colombian's taxes while living in Spain should continue, as the judge is the only one who has the power to "possibly recommend that the case be tried, or dismissed."
Shakira previously struck a deal with Spanish prosecutors in Barcelona, where she lived when she was still married to Pique. In that deal, she acknowledged that she had failed to pay the Spanish government 14.5 million euros (about $15.6 million) in taxes between 2012 and 2014 when she was still with the then-FC Barcelona defender.
Since her massive and highly public break-up with Pique, the Colombian has since left Barcelona and Spain altogether. The music legend is now living in Miami and even took her sons with her.
