Joe Biden Border Crackdown Sees Migrant Arrests Down by 40% as Less Migrants Cross Border, Says Alejandro Mayorkas
The White House is taking a victory lap after Border Patrol reported that there are fewer and fewer migrants trying to cross the US-Mexico border. This is evident as the CBP announced that they have made 40% fewer arrests as encounters have fallen to their lowest level since January 2021, according to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, to show that Biden's new border policies are working.
This significant drop is much higher than previous reports, which saw a massive 25% drop in migrant encounters and arrests. These drops reportedly stem from President Biden's border clampdown, where migrants will be deported before they can plead asylum as long as the number of migrant encounters per day does not drop to 1,500.
Politico has reported that daily crossings have already fallen to below 2,400 encounters, which is already below the threshold. This is not yet enough to lift the restrictions, but it is a sign that Biden's measures are working despite Republican efforts to say that Biden is allowing migrants to cross the US-Mexico border illegally.
This is considered a political win for Biden as he continues to point out that top rival Donald Trump was the one who derailed legislative efforts at the US-Mexico border. The announcement was also made ahead of the Biden-Trump presidential debate scheduled for Thursday where they are expected to tackle the issue of immigration, with Biden now having the numbers to back up whatever his position will be.
"President Biden will keep leading, including by taking action to secure our border and by calling on Congressional Republicans to do their jobs and pass the bipartisan border security bill," said White House senior deputy press secretary Andrew Bates.
In addition to stricter rules on the border, Biden has also been working with leaders in the countries along the migration route, especially in Mexico and Guatemala. Non-Mexican migrants deported back to Mexico are often bused back to their starting point in Mexico, which is along the Mexico-Guatemala border. Meanwhile, Biden has promised to aid businesses in Guatemala so that people there would not leave the country for a better life in the US.
Alejandro Mayorkas Lauds Joe Biden's Border Crackdown During Visit to the US-Mexico Border
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was in Arizona to visit the US-Mexico border and heaped his praise on the Border Patrol's Tucson Sector, which covers most of Arizona from New Mexico to the Yuma County line.
The Tucson Sector had seen a 45% decrease in migrant encounters since the Biden border clampdown started. It was once one of the busiest border sectors in the US this year and now had one of the highest migrant crossing declines, according to Arizona Central.
Joe Biden Employing a Carrot and Stick Approach on Migrants Crossing the Border
While many found Biden's new border restrictions to be harsh, especially for asylum seekers fearing for their lives, Biden has also loosened some restrictions on certain migrants as he walls a political tightrope regarding immigration.
As MSN noted, while Biden is employing "the stick" to dissuade migrants from illegally crossing the border, he is also using "the carrot," which is his latest plan to legalize hundreds of thousands of migrants who are already here. This includes a path to citizenship for around 500,000 spouses of US Citizens.
