Yahoo! Company Eliminates Various Software Products, Starts New Focus Under CEO Marissa Mayer
Yahoo! One of the leading digital giants is cleaning house by getting rid of some of its online software components.
Yahoo announced on Wednesday that it will either be terminating, or merging some of its digital products. Products such as Xobni, its smart email service, and Yahoo Shine, the company's digital magazine, will be deleted, while others will get a make-over.
Xobni, which spells "inbox" backwards, was purchased only a year ago by Yahoo. Since June of this year, Yahoo's website has intimated that Xobni's end was already set, and that some of Xobni's features have already been integrated into Yahoo Mail, like the "compose auto suggest," and the people search buttons, PC World reported.
Senior Vice President of Yahoo's cloud platform group, Jay Rossiter, says that Xobni's technology will be used to help their current customers' and future users' experiences.
Also terminated by Yahoo is its digital magazine Yahoo Shine, which will now be spread across the company's digital platform. Shine was a women's lifestyle online publication, and it will be closed by the end of this month.
Yahoo will focus on its other digital magazines such as, Yahoo Beauty and Yahoo Travel, Tech Times reported.
Other Yahoo applications and services that will perhaps be purged from their site include Newlook Service, an online virtual makeover tool designed for maktoob.yahoo.com. Plus, users can no longer create research reports on Yahoo Finance, and, Bookmarks.yahoo.com will be closed, but its functions will be added to its replacement Yahoo Toolbar for Firefox and Internet Explorer. The Yahoo Toolbar will no longer be available on Google Chrome, but it will be replaced by Yahoo Extension for Chrome, the Tech Times reported.
Perhaps Yahoo's new virtual overhaul is the company's way of keeping up with their competitors by, so to speak, refreshing the company's digital applications and tools.
According to Venture Beat, since the new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer's arrival, the company has been purchasing and making deals with certain companies. For example, Yahoo Screen, the company's video sharing website, has already inked a deal with HBO, and another deal has brought back former NBC series "Community" for Season 6, Latin Post reported.
This week's digital cleaning by Yahoo could be the result of this new focus. The company says that it wants to give its attention to developing their video, digital magazines, search, and communication functions, Venture Beat reported.
