Major League Soccer (MLS) Standings: DC United, Seattle Sounders FC Atop Respective Divisions
While the FIFA 2014 World Cup is still on its way to the finals, U.S. fans will have some soccer games to watch despite Team USA's recent exit after their bitter loss to Belgium in the Round of 16 matches.
Major League Soccer (MLS) is currently going through its 2014 regular season where a total of 19 American and Canadian teams (16 in the U.S. and 3 in Canada) battle it out for the championship cup. The league is sanctioned by FIFA and the United States Soccer Federation and is now on its 19th season after it was founded back in 1993 as part of the successful bid from the U.S. in hosting the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
The top 5 teams for the Eastern Conference are the following: No. 1 D.C. United (28 pts); Sporting Kansas City (25 pts); New England Revolution (23 pts); Toronto FC (21 pts); and last New York Red Bulls (20 pts). On the other hand, the top 5 clubs for the Western Conference are led by the following: No. 1 Seattle Sounders FC (35 pts); Real Salt Lake (28 pts); Colorado Rapids (26 pts); FC Dallas (26 pts); and Vancouver Whitecaps (25 pts). LA Galaxy is ranked 6th in the conference with 21 points despite being the team with the most cups. The teams that will successfully hold the top 5 spots for each conference will head to the playoffs.
Despite Team USA's loss in the World Cup, Americans are still very proud of how far their team got in the competition, finding a new love in the game of soccer despite being a relatively unpopular sport compared to American football, basketball and baseball. Following the MLS matches for the years to come would keep soccer fans excited about the sport in another hopeful bid to qualify in the next World Cup.
