Mario Games & Twitter 2014: Smash Bros. Features Patriotic Costume
Today Smash Bros. Japan released an image of Mario in his alternate costume for the game, and it's very patriotic.
Mario wears red-and-white striped overalls and matching cap paired with blue-and-white, star-printed shirt. Oddly enough, the look was not released on the Fourth of July. But a Kotaku reader has pointed out that the look is inspired by Mario's look in the NES Open Tournament Golf game.
This was confirmed by game designer Masahiro Sakurai.
"The character farther in the back isn't from the Imperial forces, and the character in the front is not the infamous drum-playing puppet in Osaka," he said. "Mario is actually wearing an outfit from Family Computer Golf: U.S Course! NES Open Tournament Golf might be a more familiar title."
Some fans have posted equally patriotic messages about the look.
Oh my god. Why wasn't this unveiled on July 4th? RT “@SmashBrosJP: ããªãªã¯ã¾ããã®åºå ¸ãã´ã«ãUSã³ã¼ã¹ãã®ãã¶ã¤ã³ã§ãã ãããªãªãªã¼ãã³ã´ã«ããã®æ¹ãæåãã? pic.twitter.com/ibn9L3LVav”

It seems fans approve of the look -- though the U.S. government might not.
The image shared by Smash Bros. Japan also features an all-white look for Samus.
The Super Smash Bros. game is also coming to the 3Ds. It will be released on Oct. 3 in North America and Europe, notes Nintendo Life.
During San Diego Comic Con on July 25, Nintendo America will hold a special tournament, which will also be broadcast on Nintendo's Twitch channel.
"Starting at noon, there will be a preliminary round in which groups of four competitors battle it out, with the winner advancing. During the finals, players will duke it out one-on-one to determine the top smasher," said a press release, according to Nintendo Life. "Tournament slots are limited, and fans will be able to sign up the day of the event on a first-come, first-served basis."
