2014 NBA Free Agents Rumors: Pau Gasol Near Deal With Chicago Bulls, Turns Down LA Lakers' Offers; Bulls Eyeing Dwyane Wade?
It appears that Pau Gasol will leave the Los Angeles Lakers and is nearing a deal with the Chicago Bulls, multiple reports confirmed on Saturday.
Jesus Sanchez of Marca reported that Gasol, who is an unrestricted free agent this summer, is discussing contract terms with the Bulls, while also adding the deal is "practically" complete.
Previous reports indicated that the Bulls are interested in acquiring Gasol in case they fail in their bid to land free agent forward Carmelo Anthony, who is reportedly picking between the New York Knicks and the Bulls.
The Bulls are reportedly planning to get Gasol via a sign-and-trade deal, but the Lakers are reportedly uninterested in taking the expiring contract of Carlos Boozer.
According to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, the two teams are far from reaching a sign-and-trade agreement because the Lakers are demanding a future draft pick similar to what they got when they acquired Jeremy Lin from the Houston Rockets on Friday.
It is unclear at this point, though, how much the Bulls are planning to offer Gasol in the absence of a sign-and-trade deal with the Lakers.
Gasol, who averaged 17.4 points to go along with 9.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game last season, is reportedly looking for a lucrative deal.
The Lakers reportedly presented two offers: a two-year deal worth $23 million and a three-year deal worth $29 million. The 34-year-old center reportedly turned down both deals, and the Lakers have reportedly accepted the fact that Gasol will not return next season.
The Bulls have been very aggressive on the free agency market over the past two weeks, looking to sign big-name players to pair up with Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah.
Acquiring Gasol would make the Bulls' frontline one of the best in the league. The 13-year veteran could slide down to the four spot and play alongside Noah while also moving back to the five spot when Taj Gibson plays the power forward position.
Aside from Gasol, the Bulls are also reportedly gauging Dwyane Wade's interest in playing for his hometown, but the Miami Heat superstar is still reportedly leaning toward staying in South Beach.
