CNN Immigration Panel Stirs Up Controversy: Mexican-Born Comedian Paul Rodriguez, Host Don Lemon Discuss Debate
The immigration debate has reached a new crescendo after Don Lemon's recent segment on CNN.
Lemon was taken to task by one of his four guests, Mexican-born comedian Paul Rodriguez, for assuming that Latino people must intrinsically support illegal immigration.
The "CNN Tonight" show began with Lemon talking about liberty and justice for all while images of the Statue of Liberty were shown. Lemon then added that "We have compassion for children." Lemon went on to ask, "Why are we so divided in this country as to what to do about this problem."
By "we," Lemon was referring to the American people. But the weekend anchor also not-so-subtly hinted at the trouble that partisan politics are having on developing a solution to this problem.
Rodriguez made his position clear on undocumented immigrants from Central and South America.
"If we accept these children and we don't repatriate them it's only gonna send out a clear signal to everyone in Latin American that you get to American you will stay here."
But the funny man wasn't holding back. Rodriguez doesn't believe the American people, whether they be left leaning or right wing, divided on what to do.
"I don't think we are divided. I think America has its heart in the right place. We need to be compassionate. We need to be strong and enforce our laws."
U.S. birthright citizenship laws state that anyone born on American soil has to be granted full, unequivocal citizenship. According to Mr. Rodriguez, this longstanding policy sends a clear message to immigrants looking to improve their lot, that it is ok to break the rule of law.
"It is precisely why we should make it clear in these countries that regardless of the -- of the trauma that they're obviously going through. But name me a Latin American country that doesn't have poor people. We have to set laws. We have to let them know that it isn't the land of milk and honey, that life isn't easy here."
